I am a rising senior intending to apply RD to Cornell. I waited until new SAT scores came out to ask you all for your best admissions guesses.

UW GPA: 3.71

W GPA: 5.05 (completely different scale relative to what I've seen floating around CC)

Rank: Top 5%

SAT: 2240 Superscore w/ 790 Math 770 Writing 680 Reading

AP Classes Taken:

Sophomore: AP Bio (5), AP HuG (4), AP Psych (4)

Junior: AP Calculus BC, AP English Language, AP Computer Science, AP U.S. History, AP Art History

Senior (pending): AP Government (American and Comparative), AP Economics (Micro and Macro), AP Stats, AP Environmental Science, AP Euro

ECs:

Captain of school's academic teams (2.5 years participating, 1 year as captain)
VP of social studies honor society (2 year member, 1 year officer)
Competitor and tutor for four years in math honor society
NHS (2.5 years)
DECA member (1 year)

Pretty confident in my essay abilities as well as my potential rec letters

Other fun stuff:

Whether or not it matters, I'm white male. No strange hooks. I haven't taken the SAT IIs yet but I'll probably take Math II and Bio M.

Oh, I also plan on majoring in Computer Science.

I’d like to mention/edit that my ECs may be limited in terms of number, but the ones I do participate in have earned me various awards, trophies, service experience, etc. I’d be a bit more specific but I fear too much information might ruin the anonymity of this post.

Also, I was wondering about the difference between CS at Arts & Sciences and CS at Engineering. I know people going to both schools for CS and would really like to know how vast the material and application vary.

Different requirements to graduate from each school. A&S gives you a bachelor of arts, while engineering gives you a bachelor of sciences. That’s it.

Eh I’m no adcom, but I’m gonna have to say no on this one. Sub par GPA, decent test scores (Cornell doesn’t look at writing), white male, superb course rigor, mediocre out of school activities (you joined some of them during junior year…?), and why are you interested in majoring in computer science?

You seem to have a unusual background as far as activities go. If you can tie everything together in your essays, you might have a shot. Also, what school are you applying for, engineering?

I appreciate the appreciation of the ABBA reference. :)

My school unfortunately does not allow students to join the social studies honor society or NHS until junior year. Also, the academic competitions mostly consist of social studies-related material and at my school the norm is to take APUSH as a junior and AP Gov/Econ as a senior. APs are also seldom offered to freshman. It would’ve been virtually impossible for me to compete as a freshman.

My interest in CS stems from APCS. I signed up for it as a fun elective and over the year grew to love programming even more. After AP exams I taught myself Objective-C with hopes of developing for the iPhone but my MacBook has for a while been in disrepair. I brought it to a professional recently and hope to have it back in top shape by early this week.
