Take a look and chance me (please)

Hi, thank you for taking a look at this. Just so you know, I am a Caucasian female if that matters.

ACT: 31 (taking it in September and trying for at least a 33)
Math-26
Science-31
Reading-34
English-34

AP Scores: 4 in AP Language and Composition last year
Taking 8 different AP classes this year

GPA: 3.85

Class Rank: Very bad, like 192 out of 546, because of the fact that I studied abroad my sophomore year for half the year in Spain. My counselors at school have offered to write letters to colleges explaining the class rank situation and what I would be at had I not studied abroad and was not missing credits normal students have.

Class Rigor: Honors classes whenever possible, took a total of 10 AP classes throughout high school and Lettered in Academics every year through high school.

Extracurriculars/Offices:
Student Council-Leadership Development and President of our district, which includes all the schools in two counties and is the biggest district in our state
National Honor Society
Spanish National Honor Society
Spanish Club
Junior Class Board-Vice President
Senior Class Board-Vice President
Invisible Children- Founder (brought the organization to my school and got people interested)
National Student Leaders Against Hunger- Board Member and Public Relations Director
Varsity Track
Junior Varsity Swimming

Work Experience:
Had the same job for 3 years, but it's seasonal so I've also had another job for a year.

I've volunteered quite a lot and am currently hoping to get an internship in my city's mayor's office (the chances of me getting it are quite good). I was hoping that the fact that I studied abroad my sophomore year would stand out, because I've heard UChicago likes students that have a passion for learning (which I do).

So what do you think? I write pretty good essays and I was planning on applying early action, I'm just so scared because UChicago is the first school that actually clicked with me if you know what I mean. Thank you.

There are a couple of things I don’t understand about what you’ve written (I don’t feel qualified to chance sand think that’s an unproductive thing do, so I won’t): you say 10 AP classes “throughout” high school – does that include the 8 you’re doing this year? So two before; but only one reportable (3-5) score? My understanding of AP scores is that colleges use them to determine what your grades mean in terms of inflation/deflation, especially when it’s a larger school, and if they don’t have a check on this/a way to more objectively measure you, that’s going to make things more difficult.

How many students have gone to U of C from your school in past years and how many others (particularly those with higher ranks than you) do you think will be applying as well?

Are any of your current APs math-based: calc or stats? I feel like you need something to offset your low ACT score in this area. I had a terrible grade from my Single Variable Applied Calculus class last year, but scored fine on the AP and am better at lower level math, which I’ve demonstrated through the SAT I’s math section (hopefully the SAT II as well, coming up).

I don’t get why your rank would be lower from not taking certain classes when you were abroad… the thing is based on your GPA. Am I missing something? Also, is that number out of 4 or 5 (unweighted/weighted)?

How many hours a week are you actually working on average?

What did you learn while in Spain, besides Spanish? I assume you took some classes – why don’t those credits transfer?

College admissions don’t really care about the score you get on your past AP tests; they don’t even ask for them in the application process. Those scores are meant purely for getting credits or for placing into a higher level class. So, the fact that you’re taking 8 APs this year should show admissions that you’re challenging yourself with a rigorous courseload, regardless of how many AP scores you’ve actually received back so far.

Agree with Fickle- the intensity/difficulty this year is important.
