Take AP calc AB exam.

Should I take the Calc AB exam this year and then take Calc BC freshman year. Or should I just test out of pre-calc. Note content and difficulty is NOT an issue. I've already worked through AOPS version of pre-calc.

How old are you? 12? Jesus Christ. When I was an entering Freshman, I had just mastered the basics of Intro Algebra I. LOL. God, CC is insane.

Anyway, don’t bother with the AB exam. Just take BC your Freshman year and take the BC exam - you’ll receive an AB subscore along with it. Taking the AB exam and passing, only to take the BC exam and pass once more with a similar AB subscore seems redundant and trivial.

Just test out of precal; it’d be a mindless waste of time. Have fun in Calc BC and study hard for math competitions while you still have time as an underclassman, if you’re into that stuff, that is.

You’ll probably be ready for BC (assuming it covers AB material – if not, you could probably learn it yourself pretty quickly). I also did a lot of math contests in HS, but didn’t take AB until sophomore year…

Wouldn’t you be able to take BC as a freshman either way? Does your school require AB before BC? What will you take after freshman year?

The only reason to take the AB test this year is if your school requires AB calc before BC calc and won’t let you enroll in BC unless you present them with an AP score. Also, you must be aware that precalc is not the same as AB calc. You say you’ve completed precalc but apparently haven’t started AB calc yet. You’d better get started if you are going to take the exam in May. And if your school offers BC directly after precalc, with no AB prerequisite, then you’ll learn all you need next year in BC; they will start with the AB material, so you don’t need any additional study or testing beyond the precalc you’ve already done.
