I'm mapping out all the classes that I need to take while at a community college. I'd like to transfer to UCSD as Neuroscience major. Would you recommend taking physics/ochem at a CC or once I transfer? If I had to choose only one class to take at a CC between chem and physics, what would it be?

I would recommend taking the chem class at your CC. Physics typically comes in a series, and most universities want the series completed there…at least I know that’s how it is for UCB. For UCSD, it may be different, but like I said, I recommend chem at the CC.

If you’re applying to med school after undergrad, it is better to have most of your premed requirements done at a university, however, they can’t really hold it very strongly against you for going to a community college and taking some of those classes. I would recommend knocking out the chem at CC and English requirements. Also, try to knock out the Calculus.

Thanks for the reply.

I have another question. How do colleges look at the grades of non-UC transferable courses? Yes they affect my GPA, but besides that, are they very significant?

The UC’s only care about your UC-transferrable GPA. By that, I mean that the UC’s don’t care about your non-transferrable courses and grades. If you have, for example, an F in a non-transferrable class, they may or may not see it (depending on the UC and department), but even if they do see it, it will not factor into your UC GPA. Thus, I would say they are really not significant.
