Is this a good idea?

I plan on majoring in Political Science/Journalism, and minoring in LSJ. Unfortunately the intro courses (quiz sections) for Communications and LSJ are either full, or FIG tied. And I am not interested in taking a FIG because they are bundled with classes I have no interest in.

I know it might be risky to put all my eggs in one basket, but I am fairly set on Poli Sci, and don't have much interest in anything besides the aforementioned three.

So should I drop a Poli Sci class - and if so, what do you recommend replacing it with? I've thought about a foreign language course (no plans to major in it either though), or something completely out of the blue. Just fyi my third course is Biofutures CHID 222. Thanks in advance!

Have you thought about taking an English class? Either ENGL 111, 121, or 131. Or if there’s a linked writing class to one of your political science courses you could do that. I’m not sure which political sciences courses you are considering, but I looked at the figs and you could take the B8 fig, which has a LSJ course and intro to Amer. politics.

There’s also the H9 fig, which has intro to international relations and a linked writing course. So you’d be writing about international relations while getting an English requirement out of the way. I’m pretty sure no matter what major you have, you’ll need to take an English course or two, so you might as well kill two birds with one stone.

There’s several other FIGS with only political science related classes that are still open. Take a look at them!

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your advice! Totally forgot about English Comp haha - unfortunately it looks like all the non-FIG 111/121/131 times are full.

As for the FIGs, my worry is that the Gen St class is kind of a waste of time, and that 12 credits seems just a little light. My plan as of now is to take POL S 203, the Biofutures class, and a class that can knock out a QSR & AoK credit. Would you recommend this or the H9 FIG you suggested? Thanks again!

I see what you mean about only taking 12 credits, especially since 2 of them come from the Gen st class. And adding another class would put you at 17, and that’s probably a lot for your first quarter. I think you might be better off putting together three classes separately instead of a fig.

Have you tried looking at the extra seats from figs? You can add a class without actually being in a fig. Just click on the link that’s on the fig search page online and check them out. All you need to do is email the address that they provide with your student ID number and name and which course you want to add and they’ll register you for it. I think there’s still an English class open and several others. That just opens up a few more options for you to consider.

Wow I had no idea that was possible - thank you so much, you gave better advice than an adviser did lol!

No problem! I’m an incoming freshman too and I spent sooo much time trying to figure out a schedule of my own, it was ridiculous. Glad to help :)
