so i’m going to take AP classes for the first time for my junior year and i’m going to take 3 of them at once. is that too much? my GPA is a 3.5 (4-point) and the classes i want to take it in are classes that i’m already good at. i’m planning on taking APUSH, AP eng (i have to if i wanna take APUSH), and AP french. i have ≥90% avg in my regular classes for these subjects (history, english, and french). i live in NY state if that helps???
so is that really a lot of work? is it a lot, especially for someone who’s never taken any APs before? thanks
AP USH and AP English is a very common combination for highly motivated juniors. The workload is dependent, in part, on the teachers, so you should ask current students at your school. Although I doubt anyone would say the load is light.
As for whether you can handle those 2 plus AP French - that’s something only you, and maybe your teachers/parents can answer. Some students have no trouble with 3 or 4, while others struggle with one or 2.
Same answer as above. While many users on this site claim multiple APs as freshman and sophomores, they are a minority.
I am in NY as well. Are your current classes honors classes for Global 2, English and French? Which level French? Is the English for next year AP Lang? Have you talked with the teachers for those classes?
Some of this varies by teacher and school but my daughter is in 11th grade and currently taking APUSH and AP Lang (along with AP Chem and Calc BC).
APUSH is similar in workload to APWH. Which seems to be more than Honors Global or honors USH, but not excessively. AP Lang is no more difficult for her than last year’s honors 10th grade English was. But kids in a different section of AP Lang, with a different teacher, do seem to feel it’s more difficult. She’s had a couple of essays that she has gotten an AP grade and a Regents grade (since they will be taking both exams this year, the teacher wanted them to have a better idea of grading for both) and got what would be 100 or close to it on a Regents scale, but closer to 85-90 on an AP scale. So the expectations are higher in AP Lang. She doesn’t tend to be overloaded with work for it though.
She is taking Spanish 4 with college credit, so I can’t help with the AP French issue. If she were to take an AP in language, that would be next year instead of Spanish 5.
i’m not in any honours or advanced classes :-< i’m in french 3 and i’m already pretty proficient in french. i’m from a public school
Ours is public as well. Does your school offer honors classes? I ask because not all do. Do you know if AP French students in your school tend to go from french 3 to AP? I know that happens at some schools. Here, foreign language APs are usually after foreign language honors 4.
Really, your best best is to talk to the teachers who usually teach those classes. Tell them you love those subjects and do well in your current classes, ask if they can explain the difference in workloads between the AP and non AP versions of the subjects because you want to be sure you can give them all the attention needed. Those teachers will be your best resource in deciding.
Another thing to check on is your school’s policy on class changes. If you go for it and take all 3, can your easily drop down to Regents level if it’s too much? Usually you can’t do the opposite and go from Regents level to AP once school has already started, but double check how it works in your school.
Is there no class between French 3 and AP?
Are you a good reader?
mom2twogirls- my school only offers advanced, no honors or IB stuff. they only offer advanced, AP, and regular. and many very proficient students in french 3 go straight to AP bc AP french doesn’t have that many students every year so they want as many proficient students in those classes as posible.
MYOS- i’m a great reader (both as in pronunciation and i can understand what they’re saying), i am a pretty decent speaker as well. there is french 4 but i asked what the program is for french 4 and it doesn’t really teach much new stuff asides from more vocab. i want to learn more grammar instead so i thought maybe i should take AP french
AP French isn’t about grammar, it’s all about applying what you know - its emphasis is on practice. If you’re very good, I guess you can try to take AP French, but be aware it’s quite difficult since you’ll be expected to know all the fundamental grammar and vocabulary, in order to be able to make speeches, argue in a debate, write essays…
debates? X_X might switch that out for AP stats then considering i’m also pretty good at stats
I would not get caught up in that. The point is really that the expectation is that the student will have already learned the grammar fundamentals. They will be reinforced in AP, but the course is more thematically-based.
@qazwsx100 This is really not the appropriate place to get your question answered. You should be asking upperclassmen, teachers, and the guidance counselor at your own school. The workload and difficulty of AP courses is dependent on the school and the teachers. Many on here report crippling workloads with hours of homework each night for a single course. My S is currently taking 4 AP courses (Calc BC, Chem, Physics II, and Lit) and if he has an hour of homework total for those plus his other 2 classes, it is a heavy night.
@planner03 sorry i’m just a teensy bit new to this AP stuff so i was just wondering
