Taking 3 languages at Smith?

Is it possible?
I want to continue Spanish, hopefully going into Spanish 220 as a first year.
I also want to start French and Arabic as well.
I was thinking about doing a semester in Morocco and France, with a summer in Spain.
Would this be doable?

Also I don’t think I would take Spanish beyond first year but I’m not sure how this would work with study abroad requirements…

This sounds like a lot, although it might be doable in theory. Taking Spanish 220 and also starting another language at the intro level is definitely possible, but it is not recommended to take two intro languages at the same time. Intro languages are a lot of work - there’s a reason they’re 5 credits per semester instead of the usual 4. You could hypothetically start either French or Arabic your first year and then pick up the other one your sophomore year, but taking Spanish 220 along with two intro languages would be extremely difficult (and your adviser would most likely recommend that you do not do that). In terms of study abroad, I’m not sure whether you’re allowed to do two semester programs in two separate countries. That might be something you need to get special approval for. But it is possible to study abroad for a semester or a year and also spend some time abroad during the summer. If your Spanish is good enough by the time you want to go to Spain, you could look into using your PRAXIS to do an internship abroad.
Also, another thing to think about is what you might want to major in. I can’t imagine that it would be easy to become proficient in three languages if you aren’t planning to major in at least one of those languages, and even if you are it would still be hard. If you know that languages are your passion and you really want to do this I’m sure you can find a way, but keep in mind that there are a lot of different subjects to explore in college, and devoting all of your time to these three languages would limit your ability to experience other areas.

It is possible to do two semesters abroad at two separate programs, but you would have to choose programs very, very carefully, and probably be majoring in one of the languages you’d like to study.

I agree that you could take Spanish 220 and one intro language at the same time as a first-year, but I would strongly advise against more than that. As to which language you should pick, I think that depends a lot on where you’d like to travel and why you’d like to learn the language. Your advisor and professors on campus will be best able to help you decide.

For morocco, you really only need Arabic or French. And, as Smith and the 5C’s don’t teach Morocco Arabic, your MSA(Modern Standard arabic) are almost useless in Morocco. Learn the french to get the cultural in and you’ll pick up some arabic while you are there

We have good programs in Arabic for Levantine or Egyptian, but not Morocco
