I'm a philosophy major who is trying to look for upper division classes that I would like to take outside of my major, as you need to take two of em for the L & S requirements.

The classes that I am most interested in for this would be psychology classes. But when I look at the psych classes, I see this message a lot:

course restrictions

This course has no restrictions at the coursewide level.
Seats have been reserved for:
- Students with a major of Psychology and Students with a class level of Senior or Junior or Sophomore (Open)
[/quote]

Does this mean that (1)the seats are reserved for people who are BOTH a psych major AND a junior or sophomore? Or does this mean that (2) you can be EITHER a psych major OR an upperclassman?

In other words, can I as a junior philosophy major take these psych classes?

These are matching conditions. If you match them both, then you fit into that category. As a junior who is a declared phil major, you do not. You need to fit categories like “Open” or “Junior or senior” or “philosophy major”.

I appreciate you taking time to try and help me out rider, but I don’t quite understand what you are saying.

You seem to be contradicting yourself. “If you match them both, then you fit into that category. As a junior who is a declared phil major, you do not,” seems to say that you have to fulfill both conditions, and as I only fulfill one, I can’t take the class.

However, "You need to fit categories like “Open” or “Junior or senior” or “philosophy major,” links the categories with the word ‘or’ which suggests that you just have to meet at least one of the requirements. Also did you mean “psychology major” here?

What I meant was that you listed category 1 “1. Students with a major of Psychology and Students with a class level of Senior or Junior or Sophomore (Open)” but there would have to be other categories (2, 3, etc) that would match you or you are out of luck.

As a psych major, I understand that it’s hard to get into psych classes if you’re not declared for psych or undeclared… but I agree with what rider said, ususally there’s a category for “open seats”… if not, if you add yourself to the waiting list (add to a discussion with the most open seats) and they’ll add you once they start processing the waitlist (after phase 1 I think?). Also, you can try emailing the prof to see if he/she can add you to a reserved seat.
