taking a foreign language

Is it really necessary to take a foreign language? I mean, is it really important? I was going to take spanish for all four years, but there was a scheduling mistake and i Won't be able to take a foreign language this year (junior) and probably won't next year. Any input would be nice.

If you really want to take it you could do an online course, take a class at a local college, or take a language other than spanish. I am not sure how inportant it is...

thanks for the response...can anyone else contribute

Depends on the kind of school you're looking at and what you want to major in, honestly. The more selective the school, the more you may want to consider it. If your career plans involve dealing with diverse people, it's a really good idea. Plus, foreign languages can be SOMUCHFUN. geek

Like lookbeyond said, depends on school selectivity. You want to go to Harvard? Take it for four years and win some cool competitions. Want to go to Apollo College? Don't bother.

I had a problem too with Scheduling AP US History and College-Prepatory German in my junior year, so I decided obviously AP is more important so i threw german away, (but i will b taking college level german in 12th though)

Personally I dont see why harvard/yale would go all psycho just because a person dropped 1 year of language, just make sure its explained in the counselers language

even though most schools still want 3 credits, so just make sure u got that

my school only requires two years of a foreign language so...

and theres no point skipping spanish one year and then returning to it the next year.

I know someone who did that for french, and they hated the class. But that was more on them... they didn't have any real problem bringing back what they remembered from a year ago.

Well, if you're going to apply to selective colleges, it is really good to have at least 4 years of a foreign language. But if you want to go to a state school, then I think that two years would be fine.

If your school offers Latin, consider it. My DD is going into her 6th year of it (school was on block schedule for a few years), she says Latin 1 and 2 are basic easy A's and will also help with SAT's, root words, etc.

GA2012MOM, you read my mind. Right now i'm scheduled for latin, but I'm afraid its gonna be too hard for me (i already am taking 4 other APs).

I just asked DD, she said it will be NO problem, Latin 1 is a joke!

I have the same problem, except with French. Ive tried emailing/calling my counselor asking about online classes but she hasnt gotten back to me and it's been 2 weeks. Can someone fill me in on the info? What's the difference, GPA or transcript-wise if you take online classes? Or does it vary between high schools?

I dont like to have too many transcripts as I alreayd have to send in transcripts to the colleges im going to apply to from like 4 places, so to me too many of em is just confusing as ****...lol

I'm actually in the same position as the OP. I just moved to a new school and now I'm starting Junior year at this new school in Hawaii. This school is pretty horrid and has Spanish 3/4 as one class in one time slot...and lucky enough that time slot conflicts with AP Physics B which I decided to take because it's the only Science AP they offer here (gay).

So to get 3+ years of Spanish I'm gonna be taking a "correspondence" course through BYU Online (Spanish 3).

If I wasn't looking at the top colleges, I probably wouldn't bother taking 3 years but my top choices are Stanford, Princeton, and Harvard.

yes selective schools like the IVYs and UCs require at least 2-3 years for foreign languages
unfortunately, my school did not offer french 5/6 and so i ended up only doing two years of french (and i loved it)
if i did one more year, i would have satisifed my college's foreign language requirement....now i have to take one year of foreign language in college -_-
