I am currently taking Spanish 5/6 in my freshman year. I have taken spanish 1, 2, 3, and 4 in middle school and I have all As. I want to take spanish 7/8, but my schedule is not allowing me to take it sophmore year (because I am taking AP Computer Science instead), so I am planning on taking spanish in junior year. I think it’s doable (as I’ve heard from others in my school) and I should be able to gets As in both, but do colleges (UCs, Ivy Leagues, MIT, Stanford, etc.) like a gap year for language?
What’s wrong with taking Spanish 7/8 (4th year) in 10th grade and AP CS in 11th grade?
The main issue with a gap is if you do not have practice, you may be less prepared for 4th year Spanish than if you take it immediately after 3rd year Spanish. Or will you continue to practice Spanish in other ways (e.g. talking in Spanish to friends who know Spanish)?
I play tennis for the school team, so I have to take an off-roll every year; I planned out my schedule carefully and I only have space to take AP CS in 10th. I’m not too worried about how I’ll do in the class, I just want to know how it will look on my college app.
What is an “off-roll”, and why would it prevent you from taking 4th year Spanish in 10th grade and AP CS in 11th grade?
I am also not understanding why you can’t flip the years you take Spanish and Computer Science but assuming that is the case then maybe talk to a Spanish teacher at the end of this year and ask for suggestions on how you can keep your skills sharp during the off year. In and of itself I don’t think colleges will care if you have a gap in the Spanish as long as when you pick it back up you can continue achieving at a high level.
