After passing AP calc AB with A, would it look bad if i take it again?

and another question!

what does class rank mean ?
rank in a specific class? or
GPA-wise percentile?

Is class rank still more important when I go to crappy high school in which there are only few ppl getting into UC, and no one that got into other good colleges?

Yes, that would look bad. Why would you take it again if you got an A the first time?

Whether class rank means a specific rank or a percentile depends on your school. Some schools will give an exact rank, for example, 14/600, and some will only give a range (decile, quintile, etc).

Colleges want to see how well you are doing in the context of your school, so yes, class rank is important regardless of how crappy your high school is.

Yes, it would not look bad, but very bad if you repeated the same class with an A average, it shows the admission committee that you do not care about your school work and are slacking off. Class rank is important no matter where u go, they need to be able to compare u with other students form your school and use it as a factor to take you over another applicant with similar stats. Class rank is basically how well you did, in terms of overall grades throughout all 4 years of high school, compared with your classmates. Most schools give a percent (top 10, 20 30 percent) but some give a specific class rank, such as 4/560.

taengoo, why are you retaking AP Calc AB? Is it the highest math course your school offers? If so, I would have looked into community college courses as an option or perhaps taken an elective instead of math.

Well my school offers AP stats but I don’t think there will be enough people taking that class.
Just in case and i am kinda interested in calculus than stats.

taengoo, however more interested you are in calc than in stat - there is no point taking the same class with the same curriculum at the same level twice, especially if you earned an A the first time through. I’d definitely go with one of PBush’s recommendations.

My son is in regular calc after a bad year in honor’s precalc (C+). He is finding the class very easy and wanted to take AP BC next year. His teacher thinks that might be a stretch, but the AP AB might be too much like the same class (regular calc) all over again. His teacher is recommending AP Stats as a much more useful class that would make more sense for someone like him who is not intending on a math or engineering major. Any thoughts on this?

Do not take stats. I suggest that your son self study BC and then take calculus 3 next year. Even for non math/engineering majors, calculus 3 would be an interesting class to take.

Stats is definitely a more useful class for everyone. But take Calc. One never knows the paths that they will take, and many social sciences require the equivalent of Calc BC, particularly if considering grad school.

@ keylyme: If your son is anything like me, he would love AP BC.

I didn’t do to well in math until recently (B-s in honors geometry, alg 2; B+s in honors calc covering most of AB), and I’m taking BC now (expecting B+, A-). I’m definitely a “humanities” guy but I have come to value and even enjoy the study of mathematics. I might not be great at it, but there is definitely something to be gained from studying something “outside of your comfort zone”. After all, if he’s good at other stuff, shouldn’t he concentrate on his weakness?

Anyway, enough about me. It is a pretty widespread belief that everyone should at least take the equivalent of the standard freshman sequence of calculus (Calculus I and II) which is basically BC. Many are recommending Calc III at some point (Case in point, advanced lawlz). I’m not so sure about that (I’m still in BC now so we’ll see) but definitely at least take BC.

While stats is definitely useful, that’s not all school is about. Besides, if he’s going into social science or something, he’ll have to take stat, and he’ll prob benefit more from a real college class at that time than an AP stats course senior year.

An important caveat though: Don’t take BC if it will be a repeat of honor’s precalc. B-s are already not so great, don’t let it get to a C+. If it reaches that point, either pull him out of the class or get a LOT of outside help. No point in suffering if he’s not learning anything right?

^There is no such thing as AP Multivariable b/c there’s no corresponding class. But yeah, multivariable is the same as calc III though whether your HS’s class is taught at the college level (prob not) is another question.

Oh…I just checked and you are correct. They offer regular calc, AP AB, AP BC, AP Stats, and Multivariable. It probably is taught at the college level. Most of the courses at this school are (even the ones with only an honor’s designation and all of the humanities courses are). It does say that you are not allowed to take AP AB and BC, though. It says there are too many topics in common; you must take one or the other then if you want to move on, you may take multivariable or AP Stats.
