Taking Band

I'm faced with the choice of taking band for the next few years or 2 or 3 more APs. Music is definitely one of my top ECs (I have 2 which I am very passionate about and I get awards in), but is it worth it to not take band to have more APs (or more academic classes)? I would have 7-8 AP's after Senior year. And, band is a fun and relaxing period (though I'm not amazing at all), I'm just worried that selective colleges would look down on me if I took band but it isn't really my main thing and I'm just average at it.

Take band. Sticking with an EC for all 4 yrs. of high school shows commitment and passion. Balance it out with available strong academic classes.

EDIT: it’s definitely NOT one of my top EC’s, it’s just relaxing. sorry for that misunderstanding

If you like it, take it. Everyone needs one fun class.

I opted out on some AP classes so I could take band, and I was accepted to 3/4 Ivies I applied to. So basically… no, it’s not going to kill you. If you really love just try to include it somewhere in you application. (I did my short answer over how marching band helped me view the world in a new way).

Have fun and play on! :)

Now I have the option of taking AP stats next year. I took Algebra 2 H this year and it was a breeze. how much work does stats tend to be? is it hard to get an A? and also would colleges look badly on me if i took band all years except sophomore to take stats? because the other incentive is that stats satisfies a stupid graduation requirement…

bumppppppp

Well if its not one of your top ECs I’d drop it for the AP classes. I only kept doing band because it was my main EC.

I talked to my band director and he let me opt out of the class period so that I could do the IB program. Now I only go to after school rehearsals. It’s definitely one of my top and favorite ECs. I would keep at it.

Thanks. Now the my only concern with taking AP Stats is the workload. How much homework is there on the typical night?

Def. Band. It shows continuity and passion (even though you yourself might think otherwise) and besides Band opens doors for a lot of EC and award opportunities. I know that through band I already have section leader, drum major, solo ensemble, etc as things to put down on my college app. So… GO WITH BAND!! lol. and it’s a lot fun most of the time.

Band is really fun, but the only award I could possibly get is being selected for the Jazz Band. Can anyone comment on the workload for stats? Thanks everyone for your very helpful answers!

bumppppppppp

Stats isn’t that bad workloadwise. I took it junior year. I’d say in comparison to the other AP math courses (both AP calc’s) it is extremely easy.

thanks spunaugle! but does anyone know the approximate homework time per night? I know that it depends on the teacher and the school, but what would you say the minimum and maximums are?

My min was none(very rare, but it happened) and max was a few hours (usually right before a test, so that included study time). I’d say the average hovered right around an hour personally. But I’m not sure about other’s, I’d listen to a few opinions to get a good idea.

thanks! would colleges look badly on me if i did band all of high school except sophomore year?

bumppppppppppp

DO BAND. I was in a similar dilemma at the beginning of my senior year. I had scheduling issues and it was basically down to band or 2 semester-long AP classes. It was a difficult decision, but I decided to take band and have not once regretted it. After talking it over with my counselor, I opted to explained the situation in the additional information section of the Common App, and I think my actions showed a musical commitment that was in line with the rest of my application. Good luck!

I’ve realized that the only reason I wanted to take stats was to satisfy that graduation requirement, and that I’ll actually be able to take it junior or senior year. The only sacrifice I’ll have to make is to only take 1 or 2 of the 3 AP science classes, instead of 2 or 3, which I hope isn’t that bad. also, i’ll end junior year with 3 AP’s and end high school with 7-9. so, I’m almost 100% set on taking band, but any more comments would certainly be helpful. :)
