Taking Courses After Being Denied to Transfer? CCC - SDSU

Hi all,

So long story short, I applied to transfer to SDSU (October of 2017) but have been denied. This was the only school I applied to because I was hoping I would get in… I have already petitioned to graduate for my associate’s at my local CC and is currently pending. If my petition gets approved, I’ll be getting my associate’s in May.

Do you think I’d be able to continue taking classes under a second associate’s degree while I am waiting to reapply to SDSU and other CSU’s? Do you think my credits/GPA would continue from my first GPA or would it start over since I would be working towards a second associate’s degree?

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Your GPA won’t start over. When you apply to transfer, you will send your complete transcript from your CC. That will show all of your classes and any AA/AS degrees earned.

In many cases, completing a second AA or AS degree doesn’t take much time because all of the general ed classes have already been covered. It is likely that you will only need to take classes specific to your new major.

But frankly, I’ve got to wonder why you feel you need a second AA/AS degree. Why not just get a job and work and start saving money to help pay for wherever it is you end up transferring to?

@happymomof1 I have a job already. I’m trying to take the time while I’m waiting to reapply to the CSU’s and UC’s of my choice to raise my GPA up without having to pay out of pocket for these classes.

You need to be careful, if you are using state funding, that you don’t run out of eligibility from the state.

You only get so much funding coverage to the equivalent of a BA.

If you use it up for a 2nd associate’s degree (amount doesn’t matter), you run the risk of not having enough time/funds left over for your 4 yr. transfer college.

If you reapply to SDSU, you may not get in. Depends on who they take for transfers.
Just because you only applied to SDSU, doesn’t mean that they had to take you. SDSU is impacted.

Taking what aunt bea said into consideration, I’d just wait it out until next application cycle and apply to more CSUs—CSULA, CSUSB, CSULB, etc. as SDSU is notoriously hard to get into.

Ultimately it is your decision. Maybe you can meet with your transfer counselor and see what they recommend about going forward.

Hi all, @OhWhatsHerName @aunt bea @happymomof1 I’m planning to appeal my admission decision because I have family circumstances that ultimately cannot be ignored. I need to get into SDSU because my mom is going through dialysis this year and I am the only one who can help her with this. (My dad is not in the picture and my brother is stationed overseas) My counselor says I have a good chance of getting my appeal approved, so I’m crossing my fingers. Thank you for your comments.

So which is it?

Here’s an issue which you might not have considered. If your parent needs you, SDSU may still deny your admission because you may not be ready, in their eyes, to fully commit to a university-given your mother’s condition. They may think that you will need to fully attend to your mother and not be able to focus on your studies.

@aunt bea, well. I’m gonna try and prove my case. :stuck_out_tongue: I can’t just not go to school despite her needing me. Regardless of what happens with this, I’m gonna try my best to keep going and make the best of this situation. If my appeal gets denied, then I’m gonna do another year of CC and apply to other schools.
