Does anybody have early release at their school?

At my school we can replace our mandatory study hall with early release and go home a block early during senior year (every other day - we're on a block schedule).

If I take this will it be looked down upon? If it matters I'm also taking 5 APs and 2 other classes...

Not only does our HS have a study hall like that, we also have “senior privilege” that allows seniors to take one less class and leave campus. As long as you take 5 cores and 3-4 APs, colleges have no problem with our kids taking only 6 classes senior year. By senior year, you sometimes just start running out of classes to take.

However you should NOT have “free periods” senior year unless your school makes study hall mandatory. Early release instead of mandatory study hall is fine, but random free periods and study halls instead of class is only okay if you’re applying to moderately selective schools.
If you’re applying for schools in the top 50 (LACs or universities), you should absolutely have 6 classes, including 4 (or 5) core classes (ie., English, Math, Social Science, Science, Foreign Language. Not taking one of those means doubling up on another from that list.)

YMMV. While taking a more rigorous course load is better, the above is anything but a hard and fast rule. I’ve seen plenty of kids get admitted to highly selective LACs and universities who deviated from this advice.
