Taking Math 53 and 54 together?

How hard would this be and has it been attempted by (wo)man?

it should be alright given that half of the people take math 54 first and the other half take 53. but I think it’s gonna be painful unless you’re REALLY into math.

thanks! how much work do the two classes involve? anyone else have an opinion?

two assignments a week for one class. about 15-20 problems per assignment.

Thanks! A couple more opinions? Looking for someone who has done this, possibly? =]

My roommate’s friend did it. According to my roommate they survived it but it was a lot of hardwork because people tend not to like Math 54 in their words

thanks Left

If you like Math, then it’s easily doable provided you don’t take the classes with super-hard professors. I only thought about taking them both together after reading Azure(?)'s post on here, and it was pretty easy for me.
Oh, and fyi, I quite enjoyed Math 54 although it was definitely quite challenging.

Does REZAKHANLOU count as a hard prof?

It has definitely been done before, and the classes are barely related. I put in as much time into 53 as I did for my high school BC Calc (for homework, that is; I studied some hours more for the midterm and final). How much work you put into 54, on the other hand, really depends on how intuitively you grasp the material, which varies widely from person to person and is completely unrelated to how well you did in 53.
FWIW, I also quite enjoyed 54, coming from someone who dislikes math in general and is not the greatest at calculus.

thanks orangejuice

i’m doing it right now. unpleasant.
53 is manageable. 54 alone would be manageable. however when you combine the 2 classes and you’ll find yourself short on time a lot (esp if you have a science class to go along in your schedule).
surprisingly, more girls than guys do this. besides me i don’t know any other guys doing it. 3 girls in my section are doing 53/54 together. today i met a girl doing 54/55. (she was too hot to be eecs so i assumed she wasnt doing cs70 hw).

o and 54 ratings aren’t that accurate. i got a 51 on my 54 midterm despite having the “easy” prof while the other prof’s class had a b avg uncurved. i studied a week for 54; i studied 90 min for 53 and got 97.

I know some people who are doing this–they seem to be handling it fine. But they are hoping to be math majors, so if math isn’t your cup of tea, then that’s probably not a good idea.
