Originally I had planned on taking French up to AP. However, I'm beginning to realize that the French department at my school is seriously lacking. So, I'm going to take three years of French, then a year or two of Spanish (my school's on a 4x4 block schedule).

Would this make me look flaky and/or indecisive? Should I just stick it out to the end of AP French, then take a year of Spanish (because I really want to take Spanish)?

Do you just want to take the class to take the class, or to actually learn the language?

You aren't going to become fluent or even proficient from school foreign language classes, it takes a lot of outside dedication like listening to CD's, reading, flash cards, etc. and speaking with native speakers.

I want to minor in either Spanish or French in college and I want to decide which one I like better now.

I also want to take Spanish because I have relatives from Spain, and because I'm decent in it already. I also live in southern California, and you need to know at least a little.

No, you're not going to be looked at as flaky. I think it's cool that you're going to take more than one language. But if you really want Spanish, I'd consider taking it as soon as you can so you can take as much of it as you can before college.

If possible, and I know this seems odd, take them both at the same time! Having each one could help you reinforce your understanding of VERY similar structures in the Romance languages, and it shouldn't be hard to maintain considering your background.

I did this with French and Japanese (not quite so related) through last year b/c my school only offers thru Japanese II. Hope to continue it in college...

Taking both will set you up well for college as well, if say, instead of minoring just in one language, you minor in the Romance group.

^^ That's VERY hard to do on a block schedule. My friend tried to do it and she said she couldn't take it senior year because she never did all of her required classes. When she got to college she had forgotten alot of it because of the year off.
