Taking prerequisites over the summer?

What happens if you take prerequisite science classes over the summer? Do medical schools reject you if you do? Why is it so bad (don't tell me because it's easy or easier; I'd rather have an A in Biology I from a communiy college than work really hard to get a C from MIT just because the class at MIT is a lot more difficult)?

Do NOT do it…there are numerous threads here that will tell you why. Taking science pre requisites at a CC during the summer is universally frowned on and viewed exactly as you describe it…trying to get an easier/better grade…sorry, but that is reality. In addition, it’s difficult to get the depth and breadth required for future coursework in the shortened summer period.

Med school admissions is already very difficult, why would you want to intentionally make your chance of admission even harder, if not completely blow them up?

What if you go to a CC?

In that case, you are better off taking core requirements and non science/math classes at the CC, in other words, fulfill your English and humanities requirements and save the math/science classes for the university.

That’s not what you originally asked and you used MIT as an example…a very far cry from CC.

Bump…

What if you take the prereq at your university over summer? I don’t understand why it is bad to take core classes over summer if it is at your university

Because summer versions of those courses often have high schoolers or visiting students and are thus considered to be easier versions of the course. No one knows why, but you’ll find this advice being given from a lot of sources other than just here, so I doubt it’s made up.

In addition, the competition is less. And, you have less time management issues, i.e., only one course instead of 4/5 to balance.

Several colleges post it on their premed website.

Take all your GE courses at the juco and basic science classes, which you will have to do to transfer into a science major. Save Organic for the 4-year if you can. In addition, take upper division science courses at the 4-year to validate your juco grades.

What about taking the Calculus 1 prereq during the summer? I would figure it would be seen as okay, since it is not really a crucial part of a premed’s education, right? I’m talking about at a 4-year institution by the way, not a CC.

No. Unless you have some fantastic reason why you can’t take it in the fall like everyone else.

If you have a good reason for it…and that reason might be???

Hint: NOT a good reason:

I am currently still in high school, and plan on finishing 30 credits (18 done now) at a local university before graduating and attending a different university. I was thinking of taking Calculus 1 at the local university this summer (the summer between my senior year of high school and freshman year of college) because it would just make my double-major easier to schedule (plus the fact that I’m bad at math and it would probably be easier at the local university, especially because I would have JUST finished AP calculus). Is the fact that I’ve been “motivated” enough to pursue so many credits early and “just wanted to keep the momentum going” good enough reasons for taking it during the summer, or will they still look badly upon me doing so?

Use your AP credits and enjoy your summer. Not many med schools require Calc, and if you are poor in math, you won’t be applying tobthose anyway.

Btw: physics is nearly all math.

Sorry to hijack this thread (Didn’t want to start a new thread concerning this same matter). But I wanted to take physics with orgo, but the times clash. And I know summer courses are heavily frowned upon, but I don’t know any other way to go around this and take the prereqs before I take the MCAT and apply. Any suggestions?
