taking sat a 5th time.....good or bad idea

I've already taken them 4 times, I signed up for June a while back just in case I again didn't do so hot in May. One SAT I took was sophomore year, so I'm not sure if that would count against me much. I have always looked at it as schools don't care how many times you take them. If they did, they would tell you on their website to not take them more than 3 times. The reason I had to take them so many times is because I want to go to UCLA, which only accepts the new ones, and your best score in 1 sitting. My tour guide there said to take them multiple times, it doesn't matter how many times you take them. So anyway, my highest score in all 3 sections came on the last test I took in May 720 Math 670 CR 690 WR. Since I already signed up for June, I figure I may as well take them, and hopefully I can improve in 1 or 2 sections. Will it detract from my application if for some reason I end up doing worse in 2 or possibly all 3 sections? I haven't even looked at a prep book, its too nice outside to study for SATs. Could I possibly attach something to my application to other schools notifying them my reason for taking them so many times (if they even care)? Suggestions are appreciated.

I think it depends on what schools you're applying too. I know that Harvard doesn't recommend you taking more than 3 SAT's . . . they said that "most students do not improve their scores after 3 tests" and there's only 3 spots on the app. for SAT I. Your scores aren't bad . . . but I guess it's really up to you and what your score goal is for the SAT.

I'm not sure taking the SATs more than 3 times is a good idea. If your scores go up significantly each time, then yes, it might be worthwhile. Otherwise, try the ACT or move on. Your scores are good, and scores are only part of the application. One admissions officer (cough, coughPenncough, cough) said that it was actually a drawback to taking it more than three times ("it shouldn't be an extracurricular activity..."). Going down shouldn't hurt you. I went down on both verbal and math on the same test (ouch!), and colleges took my highest scores.

"I haven't even looked at a prep book, its too nice outside to study for SATs."

After taking it 3 times, I doubt you will improve just by showing up at the test center.

Considering the fact that the SAT has changed big time, I doubt that colleges will hold it against you that you took it 5 times. S took it 5th time -- twice in middle school, 3 times this academic year. His combined V, S from May was 100 points higher than his previous combined V, S. For him, it was definitely worth it to take the test 5 times.
