<p>These merit awards are sometimes negotiable depending on how much they want the student. My son received initial offer that included some work study money, but when he came back to them about needing more they just rolled work study amount into regular scholarship money so he didn’t have to work and then added some more dollars as well.
Like with athletes, if they really want you…you can sometimes get a little more.</p>
<p>I know a kid who worked out a free ride to CMU, I believe this was nearly all based on merit. He got accepted to an insane list of highly selective audition programs so this may have been very helpful in working that out. So, I don’t know if it’s common at all, or even enough to add to the list, but considerable talent aid at CMU is not unprecedented.</p>
