I'm going to begin taking composition lessons soon. I've been playing the piano for eleven years.

Given my level of composition experience (none), how possible would it be for me to even * think * of attending Tanglewood? I could have three scores ready for submission... I think. I'm definitely not a composition prodigy...

If not, are there any other summer institutes that I could go to that would accomodate my level (or lack thereof) of composition experience?

You could try New York Summer Music Festival (NYSMF.org). My DD is a vocalist who has been going there for three years, and one of her best friends is into composition. He has remained very happy with their program, and he’s a pretty fussy guy in terms of composition. Faculty comes from Curtis and other leading music school in the NY-Philly area. It might be a good starting point for you, in terms of testing out summer programs.

Use search this forum/advanced/“composition”/titles, and you’ll get about 4 pages of composition titled threads. The above were gleaned from the results.

I strongly recommend Walden School in Dublin NH (July-early August). The have major musicians and composers involved at different points in their program. There is a wide range of experience, and every student produces a piece that is 5-15 minutes long, that is played by musicians such as the International Contemporary Ensemble’s (very well known) flutist and percussionist. Joan Tower was there this summer, just to give and example.

There is also a wonderful exposure to “new music” meaning contemporary classical, and creativity and originality are encouraged.

My son was accepted to the BUTI composition program without very much composition experience, and with only a few scores to submit. He did have a fair amount of music theory knowledge, though, and probably had a good recommendation from his band director. He had a great experience there, and felt that he could keep up with the others, although most of them did have substantially more composition experience. So, I think there’s no harm in applying, especially if you have a music teacher who can write a good recommendation for you. There are some good suggestions by violadad and compmom as well.
