Tanglewood v. Interlochen for Voice

Does anyone have any experience with the summer programs for either Tanglewood or Interlochen for Voice? Tanglewood has only one program and it appears to be divided between solo voice and chorus, whereas Interlochen has a solo voice group and a choral/operetta group. I am trying to get a handle on the actual differences or similarities between the two.

Also if anyone has attended both programs and has any general impressions of the differences I would love to hear.

I do not, but I would highly recommend BUTI over Interlochen anyway, based on faculty and reputation. I know that BUTI is much more selective.

Hat,
Just wondering...Have you have heard from these programs regarding summer acceptances?

hat: My son attended Interlochen after sophomore year and BUTI after junior year. He enjoyed and learned alot at both, but played trumpet in the orchestra. Can't comment specifically about voice programs, but happy to provide some general impressions that might be helpful for you to make decision:
1) Individual lessons with faculty are stardard part of curriculum (and cost) at Interlochen. The process for schedulcing private lessons at Tanglewood is somewhat haphazard and costs extra.
2) Band and orchestral musicians learn consideralby more repertoire at Interlochen, with new music and concerts every week, as opposed to every two weeks at BUTI.
3) Operetta at Interlochen is fun.
4) Interlochen is relatively isolated in the norther woods of Michigan, with not many opportunities to get off campus. My son found this shoewhat stifiling. He like the general atmosphere of BUTI much better, with more free time in the evenings to go into Lenox, eat pizza, and go to lots of free BSO concerts. I think he would have been disappointment by the strict rules and regs at Interlochen had he attended BUTI first.

My D attended BUTI after junior year of HS and went to 2 years of high school at Interlochen and worked there 2 summers. Both are excellent program, but as the previous poster pointed out, quite different. BUTI is VERY selective, and has a detailed audition process. If you can get in, go for it! Interlochen is a wonderful program, too, and the teachers will give you an honest assessment of your potential for college programs. You will get a lot of individual attention in an amazing setting. My daughter loved BUTI and loved Interlochen. You can't go wrong with either one.

mommab and MOWC thanks for the input and specifically the comparisons. It coincides with my basic understanding of the two programs. It seems, from the program descriptions, that BUTI is more focused on choral music whereas Interlochen has a separate choral music program. My son is more interested in opera than choral music and it is important to us to get an idea of where he stands as a potential singer.

notfromme: My son was accepted at Interlochen last week, but has not yet heard from BUTI.

thanks Hat!
We are still waiting. D is young, (15), and we were not completely thrilled with her audition cd...it wasn't her best. Flute is so competitive....and both programs said it was one of the most competitive for their schools. Anyway, looking at some other great camps that she is also excited about.
My older d is at a conservatory for music theater/opera. Wish I had known about these programs for her! Hope your son has a great summer and finds the road he wants to travel!!
