TAP vs FA

Well…that is confusing!

@NASA2014 could you please clarify your situation? Is it that you no longer are eligible for the tuition benefit from your dad…or what?

If the OP has his tuition paid, he wouldn’t get TAP either, IIRC.

I think what may have happened is that Op exhausted dad’s tuition benefit, applied for TAP and because he is a 5th year students and his course credits found that he is ineligible. As I stated if he has a disability, he needs to look at benefits through ACCES-VR, which is through NYSED

@sybbie719, Does ACCES-VR cover more than vocational courses? I didn’t realize they covered college degrees.

@austinmshauri,

Oh ye, ACCES-VR pays for college. We will usually sign kids up for ACCES-VR benefits senior year in high school. That pay up to full SUNY/CUNY tuition, a small tip end for room and bord, supplies, $15/hr toward tutoring. Please click link on post 9

@austinmshauri I believe my dad told me I have until I’m 24-25 years old. However I’ll be end by then. They only cover for 8 semesters. So I started on fall 2017 and end May 2021 that’s eight semesters.

My parents only pay housing and food but I’m not sure if we pay the extra money when it comes to the credits. Tuition goes by credits right? So if I’m taking 17 credits dads job will pay that?

@sybbie719, Thank you. I’ll read up on it.

@NASA2014, if you update us on your situation maybe we can help. I really think you need to talk with your advisors and the financial aid office though. And read Sybbie’s posts really carefully. She knows a lot.

You’ll have to ask your dad what Colgate covers and for how long. If they pay your tuition you won’t qualify for TAP. But I wouldn’t take 2 minors if finances are an issue. If one is required, finish that. Then maybe work on the 2nd if you have the money for it.

So…what is your problem? Your dad’s tuition benefit lasts until May 2021. Will you be done with your degree by that time?

@NASA2014 , You started your current school as a junior. Haven’t you been at this school 2 years (school year 2017-2018 & 2018-2019) .

You started community college in 2014, where you were in attendance for three years.

If Colgate is looking at 8 semesters of attendance it won’t matter that you have only been in your current school for 2 years. They may not pay for you to be a fifth year (really 6th year) student.

TAP/Excelsior definitely does not pay for a fifth/ sixth year even if this is your first time applying for NYS aid

There is no more “free money” for you. If it is on you, then you are still eligible to borrow $7500 to pay your SUNY tuition (IIRC, you are at Albany).
