I'm a junior (class of 2011) and while I'm in an excellent, highly competitive public school in metro NY area, the GCs are not very helpful giving advice re: targets and safeties. I'm trying to round out my college list. I'm in all AP and Honors courses and while my school doesn't rank, I estimate I'm in top 5%. Here are my stats to date: Wgt. GPA 98/99, AP World Hx - 5, SAT II's: World Hx - 800, Molecular Biology - 790, Math Level 2 - 760. Strong EC's in performing arts (my passion), Model UN, journalism.

I'm interested in schools with strong theatre programs. Selecting the reach's are easy. Mine currently are Brown, Yale, Columbia, Princeton. I also have schools like Northwestern, Vassar, Barnard, and Wesleyan on the list. I really need help selecting targets and safeties. So far I have Ithaca College on my safety list. Any advice would be great. Thanks!!! :)

Your number is really good. Do you need financial safety? If you do, please add SUNY Purchase in your list. For matches, I think Rochester, Brandeis, Trinity, Hamilton, Sarah Lawrence, Wheaton (MA), Conn College, Bard, Skidmore can be your matches/low matches.

Thanks for the information. Definitely need financial safeties, too. Glad you mentioned it. Not sure what you mean by matches/low matches. Are matches equivalent to targets? If so, are the low matches the safeties? Which on your list were considered the matches and which were the low matches?

I’ve put most of the schools in the list of colleges on my Naviance account at school, but I didn’t have Rochester, Trinity, Hamilton, Wheaton or Conn College on the list.

What kind of theater? There are two sub-forums on theater admissions that are in the College Majors Forum. You can reach them by clicking on “Discussion Home” in the upper left of this screen and then scrolling down. Here are the direct links:

Sit down with your parents (or whoever it is who will be helping you pay for college), and run your numbers through a couple of the financial aid calculators. There is a good one on the College Board website, and other ones at [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) and even here at CC. When you know what the colleges will expect your family to be able to pay, find out what your family really truly can pay and what kind of loan burden they are willing for you to take on. That information will help you figure out your financial safeties. Is SUNY Purchase the best bet? Do you need to dig even deeper to find a place that would be cheaper for you?

A young relative of mine is a theater major at Wagner College on Staten Island. Would that location work for you?

Happymomof1,
Thanks so much for the links you included in your post and the financial aid information. I definitely have my work cut out for me!

Put UVa on your radar. We are not known for our Arts program but one positive for that is that you can stand out if you come. The community is very committed in coming to the performances that the students put on. Here is a link to the Arts site at UVa: [Arts at the University of Virginia](UVA Arts)
