I would assume UTD, UTA and A&M are on your list and at least one or two would be a safety? Would you consider UTA if you didn’t get CS?
Maybe add a school with rolling admission, apply early and get an acceptance in September or October. People love Pitt for this reason.
If you like your safeties then why look for targets? Aim high. Also compare your list to your safeties. Would you attend UMass over UTA or a free ride at UTD? If not, don’t apply.
GT and Purdue are known for co-ops. My S20 was offered several at GT. We liked Northeastern and Drexel. Co-ops were high on his list. Case is big on demonstrated interest. CMU is great for CS but not known for its social aspect.
Maybe add Michigan, UMD, VT or NC State (underrated in my opinion).
A&M and UTD are rolling and most of my senior friends who had a good class rank and applied early got admitted by October.
I would strongly consider UT Austin if I got computer engineering since the major has a software-related path (I’ve thought about applying for this instead of CS).
Yeah, GT and Purdue are very high up on my list of schools that I’d like to go to
I’ll definitely look into the 4 schools you mentioned at the end. Maybe, NC State and VT could be possible targets (the other 2 are probably reaches)
Thanks!
And why NOT spend them? What’s wrong to spend your money on whatever you find important?
This argument is really ridiculous. Why spend money for a nice house if any with a roof would do? Why spend money for a nice car if a Yugo is good enough to transport you from point A to point B?
Look at colleges/universities that offer CS in their liberal arts schools: U michigan, UC Berkeley, and ucla has a linguistics/CS major in Arts and Sciences. It’s easier to get into CS when it’s not in a separate engineering school.
Again u take a partial picture. Op asked for other schools and I provided a range of schools in cost and merit.
Op seemed unaware of merit and on another chat asked for more info I simply introduced an opportunity they might have that they were unaware of. Do schools like Mines, Rochester, and CWRU come off to you as necessarily affordable ?
You answer your way and leave others to answer their way. The idea is to educate OP.
If you think of targets as a toss-up, kind of a 50/50 shot, then yet. If you think of targets as a more than likely option, then no. I didn’t follow NC State’s results thread closely, but there were some astounding results in the VA Tech thread this year. For popular fields, VT has become very competitive. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same is true for NC State, but I can’t say for sure. Take a look at the results threads and decide for yourself.
OP, I think you’re ahead of the game. You have several fantastic in-state options that are probably guaranteed AND you seem OK with attending. That’s a great place to be. Lots of kids, including mine, want to go far away. Even colleges close to home are not HS 2.0.
After that, research other programs. Look at graduation requirements. Look and see if they’re strong in your particular area of CS.
Then apply to 5-10 more schools and wait. As far as target/reaches I wouldn’t worry. I would just assume that CS is a reach for pretty much all top schools. Even a VT or NC State is probably a reach for OOS students. I think you’ll get into a few other schools but no guarantees and it might be a few you didn’t expect. Good luck.
