I’m going to apply to TASP 2017…add on to the thread if you are too! Hopefully applications come out soon…
Is TASP for incoming juniors or do you have to be currently a junior to apply?
You have to be a junior when you apply to TASP (so, it’s a program for rising seniors). Sophomores can apply to TASS, a Telluride program on critical black studies.
Applications are live!!!
What programs you guys thinking about??
As of now, I’m interested in Michigan I and Michigan II
Do you know what format the book/media list and activities list should be in? Should it be in paragraph form or literally a list?
Anyone?
@Soccer1235 Either is acceptable. I explained the personal significance of each book I listed when I applied to TASS last year. I also wrote a quick summary. The media list really isn’t a significant part of your app. As long as you aren’t listing Junie B. Jones and Captain Underpants, you’ll be fine. Also, don’t feel pressured to put down books you skimmed through or didn’t enjoy/understand. Your book list may possibly come up in your interview and it’s hard to talk about something you aren’t passionate about.
Ok hahaha thanks @Hamlon I’ll probably incorporate some works of music, as that’s mainly what I can talk about and it’s an option there.
Former TASPer here. I wrote it as a list and included a very brief reason for why I chose that work. I think I listed a couple works of literature, philosophers, paintings, and a movie or two (rom coms!). Nothing from my list came up in my interview, but I know some people were asked about it.
Ahh guys I’ve just started writing my essays and I’m so nervous!!
@ChasingMerit
Does TASP pay attention to our family background, income, and whether we are a minority? i.e. if someone from a minority group is super under-represented, are they more inclined to accept that student?
@CIRCUITDEBATER They give preference to low-income and minority students, but everyone will get in due to the strength of their essays and then scores, transcript, recommenations, etc.
Good luck everyone! TASP was honestly one of my most formative life experiences, and I truly believe my mind has been enlarged by the variety of events and discussions, and of course, awesome peers.
Apply, even if you think you’ll get rejected or you’re not qualified; in many cases, you will prove yourself wrong, or at the very least, you will find something in yourself that you may never have known existed.
For example, I went in with the fear that my book list lacked in major philosophy texts or whatnot (so many books were related to sci-fi/fantasy, and I even mentioned a Disney movie as a favorite film), but I still made the cut with bomb interviewers, and now not a day goes by in which I do not think of something related to TASP material (oh, an essay on characterization… let’s relate this to archetypes of the collective unconscious and of the darkness that lives in all men). And the memories are simply priceless.
Also, Telluride makes every effort to not discriminate based on background – the end result is a very diverse community of awesomeness.
there’s nowhere for transcripts and rec letters
@gigichuck Don’t worry, TASP doesn’t ask for transcripts and rec letters yet. If you are given an interview (I believe about 10% of applicants go onto Round 2), they will ask for your grades and a letter of rec.
I echo everything @PotatoStorm said about her TASP experience.
hey everyone , who’s an international applicant ? Do you think that being an international student will lower the chances of being accepted ?
Hey everybody! Do you have to submit PSAT scores when you apply?
hi everyone, is it significant how long our essays are? I know they give us 9,000 characters, but if I have 7,000 some characters and feel like my essay is completed in terms of content, should I push to add more or are they looking for quality over quantity? thanks
