Also, what state are y’all applying from?
@helloCCpeople California
@helloCCpeople I’m from Utah! What about yourself?
I’m a finalist as well. I’m from New Jersey, and I was wondering whether or not my interview will be in person. Were any of you given any information about your interviews? For any TASS alumni, what are the sort of questions that they ask?
I’m also a finalist from North Carolina.
im a finalist from atlanta, georgia, congrats to everyone who made it this point!
Hey guys, I’m a TASSer from 2016! @AdmiralThrawn15 To answer your question, in my experience with the interview, they really seem to make them personal to your own essay. In my own case, I wrote one of my essays on affirmative action and was asked questions related to that topic(i.e. does it hurt more than benefit, why do you hold the stance you do, etc.) ; however it is also important to point out that only a few of the questions were solely about things I talked about in my essays. The conversation really flows simply on the way you and the interviewer(s) decide to take it, so there is no real way to prepare but going over your own stances on deep/critical issues and being able to explain yourself. In all honesty, my interview was one of the best conversations I’ve had with a group of people. They are not trying to test you, or see if what you say is wrong or right, but simply to get of feel of how you think and how you explain yourself. As cliche as it sounds, they really do try to help you put your best foot forward out of you, but it is because they want to get the best out of the future TASSers.
If anyone happens to come up with anymore questions, don’t be afraid to @ me!
I am a finalist from Istanbul, Turkey Good luck to everyone :))
@phanakin Sorry for the late response!! I’m applying from Virginia, northern DC area though.
@dannydalt64 Oh thanks! how many people interviewed you? and how did you enjoy the program?
@helloCCpeople I had 3 interviewers talk with me. It took place in an office at a law firm one of them worked at.
In regards to the program, I really found it to be an extremely rewarding experience. Not only do you have the opportunity to explore outside your own community and meets kids around the country (and sometimes parts of the world). Even outside of classes, you really get to form bonds with kids and have the chance to intellectually engage with your TASSers in conversation may of your peers back at home would probably not be inclined to discuss. The factota (the equivalent of counselors) will always be there to support you and rely on. To be frank, there was some petty drama amongst some individuals, but we were easily able to get over it since many of people there were mature enough to talk about their problems. Overall, you are forced to think in a different manner not only from your seminar discussions and activities but merely with the everyday conversations you have with the people there.
I could go on for a while about my experience, but ik my response is already long lol. I hope I answered your question!
What issues does the program actually dicuss during seminars? I’m aware there’s an emphasis on ethnic studies, but could you please elaborate on that?
Have any of y’all had your interview yet? I know we’re supposed to be contacted “within a month,” but I’ve heard zilch and I’m a little worried.
@dannydalt64 I know I didn’t ask the question, but that was super helpful, thank you!
@phanakin I’m also starting to get worried, they said we would be contacted by March 28th… I’m debating whether to send them an email or not.
I actually logged into this discussion to see specifically if I was the only one who hasn’t gotten contacted for an interview yet lol
I had my interview just last week. It was pretty nerve wreaking.
Omg can you please enlighten me on the certain questions that were asked and what to prepare for , I’m so nervous also did they call you on your phone . Is there any really important stuff we should know before doing the interview

Most of their question comes from your essay. The spend the majority of the time asking me about the Black Lives Matter movement (what I wrote about for my essay). Make sure you know your topic well because they will ask you hard questions about your beliefs. Lastly, they spend half of the time asking about my experiences I wrote about. Don’t be nervous. You got this!
Yeah… I haven’t been contacted either, and @moonface I’m glad your interview went well!
