Congratulations guys GAH, this is so exciting. I can hardly stand it. I just feel like it’s too good to be true.

And as it turns out, I was worried for nothing. My parents are being oddly cooperative I’ve got the form + check, plan on putting them in the mail tomorrow morning. My dad’s been heavily hinting about accompanying me to Minnesota though. Ah, well - I’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

How do you guys plan on packing? Apparently it’s been around 50 degrees in Northfield lately, which is a lot colder than I’ve been used. Hopefully the flooding will not be too much of a problem by mid October. Oh dear. I just realized I don’t have any rain boots. Or tennis shoes, for that matter.

(And I know exactly what you mean PGonzales - Excellent academics + “quirky” students, I couldn’t ask for anything else)

This is me trying to find an outlet for my excitement. My friends have obviously gotten tired of my ravings so I decided to update TOC in less than 48 hours (!)
I found out I’ll be flying with two other kids in the general area and emailed them to introduce myself. One of them actually responded and it was like, INSTANT bonding Very cool.
Anyway, hope you guys are all packed and ready to go. This is going to be awesome.

Ds didn’t do TOC as, I think, it conflicted with a similar program at Grinnell, and he went there instead. TOC is this weekend, parents’ weekend??? Busy, busy time,

Oh, that’s a pity. Grinnell is a great college though, so I hope he enjoys it! Out of curiosity, what drew him to Grinnell?

And no, my dad is not coming with me. Instead, he’s taking some time off of work to stay home with my little sister while I’m away. I’m very grateful about that (him taking time off work + giving me some space :p).

I think I was unclear. That recruiting weekend he went to Grinnell, but he’s a freshman at Carleton now. He chose Grinnell in that case first because he got that app first and he didn’t want to skip out on them once he was accepted.

The reason he chose Carleton for college was that he felt the student body was more diverse, both in terms of ethnicity and personality. He had great overnights at both places but really felt like Carleton was the place where he fit in more.

By the numbers, Grinnell actually has a bit more racial/ethnic diversity than Carleton, plus a higher percentage of internationals.

Which school has a more diverse “personality” is pretty subjective, but the feeling I got after visiting both campuses with my son and talking to a lot of people is that Carleton has a more even distribution of political viewpoints than Grinnell and lacks an activist core that seems to set the agenda at Grinnell. I could be totally wrong about this, of course, but this was the impression I got. I remember talking to a few students at Grinnell who described themselves as very “liberal and progressive” but said even they were getting tired of the “shrill, intolerant, and self-righteous” (their words) behavior of campus activists at Grinnell. I don’t get the feeling that any one group or viewpoint sets the agenda at Carleton, except that most of the students seem smart and delightfully goofy. In the end, though, I think the two schools have much more in common than not. My son’s at Carleton, but I think he’d be just as happy at Grinnell.

Youdon’tsay - ah, I see. My mistake then :)

So, I personally think TOC went swimmingly. I just wish we had MORE time, because there was so much going on it was hard to choose. I feel like I really bonded with the other TOC students and saying goodbye was really hard. There was a party on campus yesterday (actually, I think there were a couple), but I had a lot more fun playing Apples to Apples, foosball, and Ultimate Frisbee And the campus is just gorgeous, especially in the fall time.

notan - there were definitely more than a few parties (there always are…haha), but there are always other things to do. I’m glad you had such a good time! Any questions about Carleton, feel free to ask. :D

By any chance, were you playing foosball in Sayles? I thought there seemed to be a lot of prospies there! Also, Apples to Apples is pretty popular here…I’ve played it a lot. It’s a pretty great game.

Haha, unfortunately I wasn’t one of the prospies at Sayles then. We played foosball during the ice cream social, but I don’t remember where that was. The ice cream was delish, though I probably had more whipped cream than ice cream
Apples to Apples is just hilarious. We found the game in the Dacie Moses house (which, for a cookie-baking house, can be really creepy at night when the lights are mostly off).
Ah, so many great memories.

Omigod! I did TOC too!! I played foosball at the ice cream social and apples to apples at Dacie Moses house too!! My friend and I (both from the virgin islands) applied and got accepted. Had a great time.

…did you by chance stay in the Asia house? :]
I think it’s so awesome that Carleton is known in the Virgin Islands We had someone from Hawaii, too. All we needed was a student from Alaska and we’d have the furthest ends of the country represented.

I read somewhere that the Class of '14 has at least one student each from Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Not sure about the USVI, but hopefully they’ll get one (or more) for the Class of '15. Maybe Guam too!
