What's it mean that the class is taught by staff? Are there many professors teaching the class at the same time? Or do different professors teach on different days?

they havent decided on who's teaching. but worry not, they will find someone

Good thread, I saw this on the math10a section and I was going to ask as well.

Thats the worst... you never know who you are going to get...

does anyone have any good experiences with going into a class taught by "staff" and then having it be a decent teacher?

^LOL dude the answer to that question is totally useless. When it says "Staff," you know that taking that lecture will be a shot in the dark. Maybe good, maybe bad. Either way, a person telling you about their past experience with the unknown isn't somehow going to have implications on your experience.

avoid if possible, if it's between a terrible teacher vs. "staff", take staff.

my experience stems from czworkowski for chem6a. it was either "staff" or crowley (who is an even worse professor if you look at CAPE).

so between CAPE and ratemyprofessor, which one do you trust if they provide conflicting ratings about a prof???

whats the link for CAPE?

cape.ucsd.edu

oh if u wanna see the ratings just find the class on the schedule of classes and click on evaluations.

i have to choose between Emre Mengi and Staff for Math20C and the ratings for Mengi aren't so hot, actually they're horrible, so do you guys suggest i go with the staff? look up mengi for yourself, it doesn't look promising at all haha

take staff. some of my friends had mengi. couldn't understand a word he said. avoid at all costs. at least you can only go up (or stay the same if you're unlucky) in terms of professor quality

haha that was what i was thinking. hopefully it's up, and wayyy up if possible. either that or i can waitlist for cioaba's class and be like first or second in line for some sections. good idea or no?

twon, I am in the same position as you...

4th on the waiting list on Rabin...And it's not looking too good. I'll have to check tomorrow. I wanna waitlist for Cioaba, but it's still the same risk...
If worse comes to worse, I'll go with Staff...

what about pomeroy vs. staff?

yeah i think i'll stick with staff because it can't worse than mengi. i want to waitlist rabin too though because he seems like the most popular/best teacher

That's true. I just don't like the time. It would be the only class in the evening on MWF, and it seems like a hassle (i.e. if I'm hanging with friends, but then I gotta go to class for 1 hour), but I would rather have that than a terrible teacher like Mengi...but if they're both bad, then I might have to jump ship to 8am.

confused_junior, pomeroy doesn't seem that bad. he's on ratemyprofessors and he seems okay

Math20C at 5-5:50pm MWF is going to be taught by Nagy. He seems to have received good ratings, so I dropped from the waitlist right away. I also just e-mailed him about my situation on my final (I have 2 finals at the same time), and he sent me a reply; he seems pretty understanding.
