Re: April 6 admitted students day. According to tcnj web site details released in March. I assume that’s when registration will open. We plan to go.
S19 still has not heard anything. Checked junk mail.
@cakeisgreat Those hearing already are ahead of TCNJ’s stated notification date. Are your son’s stats near the top of their admissions profile? Did he apply to a competitive major?
**The College of New Jersey prides itself on giving every application the most thorough review possible. While TCNJ makes every effort to notify students regarding their admission decision as early as possible (starting in early March), some applications will undergo multiple reviews before a final decision is made.
@emeltr - Hoboken is a very safe small city. It has a lower crime rate than the NYC area in which most of NYU’s facilities are located, and it is far safer than Newark (which has one of the highest crime rates of any city in New Jersey), and Philadelphia. Hoboken has become a gentrified, “hip” small city, which has one of the highest per-capita incomes in the state. Many Wall Street investment banking types moved there. If your student likes NYC, NY is a 10 minute, $2.75 ride away on the PATH train into midtown and lower Manhattan from the Hoboken Terminal. The city is also served by New Jersey Transit trains to the surrounding states and is convenient to Newark Liberty International Airport. If he/she is interested in engineering, science, or quantitiative finance/technology management and business, your student won’t do better than Stevens.
@Engineer80 Stevens is definitely of interest and Hoboken does seem nice, but unless he gets a huge amount of merit money from them it can’t compare to the cost (after merit $) of the other schools he has been accepted to, even with TCNJ only giving him $5K per year. Don’t want him starting his adult life with a burden of debt!
@emelte My son received $23k per year from Stevens and $5k per year last year. His stats were SAT 1450 GPA 4.2 weighted. Hope this info helps! He also was accepted to NJIT (10k/per year) Fordham ((20k/per year) Rowan (16k/yr) and no merit from Lafayette, Lehigh, & VA Tech
@emelte Sorry, forgot to state this was last year.
I got something in the mail 2-3 weeks ago from TCNJ which said “Hi Potential” is this a sign that they might accept me?
@emeltr - Of course, it is a good thing not to have to graduate with student loans, however - cost is only one variable (albeit, an important one) in the equation. Considering that Stevens returns one of the highest starting and midcareer salaries and ROI on tuition of all institutions of higher learning in the United States (15th out of 1,134 institutions in Payscale’s survey), student loans to attend Stevens strike me as quite a good investment. It is noteworthy that Stevens’ ROI is as high as it is despite the higher tuition being a private university compared to a public college like TCNJ. Stevens students have found their loans to be excellent investments. I know that when I interview people for example, knowing the rigor of Stevens’ graduates and their capabilities they stand out against those of the public institutions (and most of the private ones) in NJ and the NY metropolitan area. Stevens is a research university with major industrial and government funded programs whereas TCNJ is primarily an undergraduate, non-research or teaching institution. There are far more opportunities and industrial/professional connections in the former. Comparing them is somewhat of an apples-to-oranges affair.
Best of luck to your son/daughter. I am certain he/she will be successful in any endeavor.
Does anyone know when tcnj sends financial statements out?
Does anyone know when the next round of decisions should be coming out? I applied as a nursing major btw!
@band1234 i havent heard back either and i am a nursing major as well
@njtwinmom fin aid should be out by April 1st according to their accepted students page
Does anyone know when the next wave of decisions will be coming out?
@ktaveras468 We were there today and someone asked a similar question. They said they are working through rounds of apps and they don’t commit to anything more than everyone hears by April 1.
@Sparcky how was your visit? did you like it?
@kataveras468 last year there was a wave around the 26th
@RustyNail17 thanks for that info. My son has two friends (they have similar stats to each other) that applied ED to Stevens, for merit one got $20k (male) other got $40k (female.) If he doesn’t get at least $40k I think TCNJ is a better option for Engineering undergrad, and I don’t think he is going to get that from Stevens even though his app may be stronger than both. He got into TCNJ Honors (stats 1470, 3.9, APs, NHS, Varsity tennis, nationally ranked musician.) @Engineer80 yes Stevens is incredibly impressive but for undergrad not worth the debt in my opinion. Money is not the only factor (saw NJIT this weekend and even though they gave him huge merit did not like the area) but I will be happy to send him anywhere he wants to go for Grad school if he works hard and does well. I am really leaning toward TCNJ (though Stony Brook is comparable after merit and need to check them out too.)
@ktaveras468 I’ve been there a few times between my two kids, open houses and info/tours. Yesterday was a general session because there was a mix of seniors, juniors and transfers. It was a small group. Didn’t really learn a lot of new info. It was more for my son to have the gut check of ‘can I really see myself here?’ and a compare/contrast to his other remaining choice. One of the tour guides is in honors, so we got a little more insight there (my son has been admitted to honors). No dorm tours on weekdays but he wouldn’t be in the towers anyway. The campus is really nice and they have obviously been investing in upgrades. It’s going to be a tough decision for him, there is no clear winner. We may go back to both again, including the April 6 admitted day. We had the added bonus that my friend’s daughter, who is a senior, met with us and answered a lot of our questions - like what are weekends like, what are the students like, how many go home regularly, etc.
