Tcnj Rutgers or Rowan

I’m a high school senior accepted to Rowan electrical and computer engineering program and have received a 15k merit scholarship renewable for all 4 years which brings the total cost of attending Rowan well under 20k . Also accepted at TCNJ and received 5k merit scholarship. Also accepted to Rutgers and received 2k merit aid… Loved TCNJs campus and it’s generally viewed as the overall better academic school over Rowan and Rutgers but TCNJ engineering is not as highly ranked as either Rutgers or Rowan engineering. Rutgers large campus and class sizes make it less desirable to me. What’s making this an unexpected tough decision is how impressed I was by the Rowan campus, it’s new facilities and it’s new dorm. Is TCNJs perceived overall superiority enough to give it the nod? Or would I be I crazy to turn down Rowan’s generous scholarship and substantial savings over TCNJ? I walked away from from the Rowan tour thinking that Rowan may eclipse TCNJs “name” cache in the near future given all the investment in the campus and it’s STEM programs.

“*Location: New Brunswick is a much more dynamic location than Ewing and Access to NYC and Philly is easier”

Access to Philly from TCNJ is a matter of a train ride - the train station in West Trenton is less than 2 miles from campus, safe and convenient. (I graduated from TCNJ and have hopped this train a few times

You can also take a train from Hamilton directly into NY Penn Station - about a 15 minute drive to the train station, or you can get a bus from campus. Granted, most kids aren’t familiar with mass transit, but once you learn it opens all kinds of doors. You are also very close to Princeton, and we used to go there frequently.

Personally I’m a Rowan fan now  but just wanted to offer some info on my alma mater TCNJ

@willc Congratulations on having three good options. Can you do all three schools without debt? Then pick the one with the best fit. You won’t go wrong at any with the academics, though you could ask each department about the placement rate for their graduates and where they go to grad school. If you can’t do all schools without debt, pick the one that minimizes your debt, which sounds like it will be Rowan.

@mtown27 Thank you for clarifying the aspect of train access from TCNJ to either West Trenton or Hamilton. I commute out of the latter to NYC about 1x a week; it’s a great station. That said, I stand by my Rutgers assertion as you can walk from the train station to the College Ave campus and catch a campus bus (no fares, virtually continuous service) to the other campuses.

(Sorry, I inadvertently misdirected this reply in my previous post. )

I am an engineer and my son was accepted to both TCNJ and Rowan. While I favor TCNJ over Rowan in general and for most majors, Rowan’s engineering program is the stronger of the two IMO. The curriculum at Rowan is very hands on while the program at TCNJ seems a bit more book heavy. Rowan has invested heavily in their engineering school and it shows; their graduates are well regarded in my workplace. My son ended up turning down both as he received a nice financial package at a private uni that he loves, but he seriously considered Rowan during his search. With a 15K merit award Rowan is practically free for you.
