TD Visa to F-1 Visa help

Hi I'm a 21 year old Canadian Citizen living in California, US.
I came to California from Canada this February and I think my TD Visa expired when I turned 21(March was my birthday). I plan to go to a community college in Los Angeles this fall. What should I do to have guarantee to attend this fall? I've asked the counsellors of the school and they just tell me I need a valid visa. Is obtaining an F-1 visa possible in the US or would I have to go back to Canada to get one? Thank you.

You can only apply for an F-1 visa from an embassy abroad, so you’ll have to leave the US at some point.

Please take care of your current visa situation. If you overstay your visa for more than 180 days, you are inadmissible to the US for 3 years. If you overstay for more than a year, you make yourself inadmissible for 10 years. And if you accrue several immigration infractions (e.g. overstaying one visa, getting a new one, overstaying that one too), you may make yourself permanently inadmissible.

b@r!um thank you so much for giving me a clear reply. It has helped a lot. So I plan to visit Canada within the next month. Thanks again I really appreciate it.
