Teacher Recommendations

Who should we ask for recs? What if the teacher who knows me the most doesn't exactly teach a 'hard' class? Is it better to get a rec for someone, say, who teaches an AP Class?

If your AP teacher doesn’t know you very well then it’s not best to ask him/her because his/her letter will seem very generic/impersonal. It’s okay if the teacher teaches your elective class or a non-AP class. The letter is supposed to reveal your personality (they can see your APs on your transcript).

I had a similar question: if you get two teacher recommendations from teachers in similar subjects (for example, AP Calc and AP Chemistry), does it matter? Do top tier schools like to see diversity in the recommendations, like a teacher from an English/social studies class, and a teacher from a math/science-related field?

^^ Many schools will specify one rec from a science/math teacher, the other rec from an English/humanities teacher. Depends on the school, you need to determine that from the school’s application info.

To the OP, I agree with The Man. Don’t ask for a rec from somebody if they don’t really know you. Put yourself in their situation. What kind of rec would you write if you didn’t know the person?

The moral of the story: do well in your tough AP classes, and get to know your tough AP teachers!

It’s just that I don’t think the admissions officers are going think of me highly enough if I get a good rec from a teacher of an easy class, seeing as they know that the teacher will compare me to ‘not so smart’ students.
