usually, how many recs would you ask a teacher to write...assuming they only write one and change the name of each school? like around five or 6? would 7-8 be too many?

No, not if you told them in advance - they only have to check boxes, write a sentence or two, and enclose a letter printed on school stationary. One letter will do for all schools (there might be some exceptions, but I didn't encounter any).

oh, so i can ask two teachers to write 8 each? like a couple of the ivies, stanford, jhu, duke?

Yes, that's right. If some of the schools use the Common App, it's even easier. Make sure you fill out the forms as much as you can to minimize the amount of work your teachers will need to do.
