I was wondering how many actually teach classes, and how many there are.

D is a freshman and all her classes have been taught by professors. The discussion sections were lead by Teaching Assistants or Teaching Fellows.

I don’t think any teach classes. Sections are lead by TAs though.

And even then, “section leaders” vary. For SLE, I’m pretty sure all the section leaders had PhDs and extensive experience in the classics/philosophy/etc. I’m not that familiar with the biographies of all the section leaders, but I know a couple of them also knew multiple languages.

Graduate TA’s only teach classes during the summer. During the year, all classes are either taught by profs or lecturers.

TA’s generally teach one or two discussion sections per week, and are in charge of administrative stuff like office hours, grading, proctoring exams, etc.

Some depts also hire undergrad TA’s - bio, chem, CS, for example.
