hi. I have been thinking about this for a while but now I'm really seriously considering this. I am thinking about getting teacher certification in on oe fthe following states: PA, NY, MA, VA/MD/DC or possibly IL (ll places with good public transport). My concern is, would I have to get additional schooling? I would already have an MA and a cert for adult ESL but that;s it. WOuld I need to get an additional masters degree or just take a test or take additional specific classes?

I would consider getting certified in another area as well...probably languages because that is what I do best (Romance langauges).

I would eventually like to get a PhD and be an administrator in an intensive ESL program or foreign language program, but before that I'd like experience teaching all ages.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any tips or advice on certification programs or just general advice. Any help would be appreciated

Each state has its own certification rules. Some states recognize certification from certain other states, but I don't know if any of those are on your list. You have to visit the websites of each individual state department of education to get the current scoop.

The good news for you is that I do have the information for Maryland!

Maryland will do a credit count of all your previous academic coursework, and will ask that you complete missing coursework and take some of the Praxis tests for permanent certification. The credits can come from any fully accredited college or university. Lots the MD community colleges have Departments of Education, so you don't have to shell out big bucks for the classes. Some Maryland school districts might hire you as a temporary/emergency/provisional teacher based on your experience.

A number of years ago I had a very pleasant conversation about this topic with one of the professors in the MAT ESOL program at Trinity University in Washington, DC. You could call them up and ask about certification in DC.

Good luck!

Thank you!!!! Hopefully, since MOST of the states in which I would want to teach are close to each other, the reqs won't be TOO extremely different....but I will definitely check them out.
