TEACHING WITH CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE?

Hi so I’ve read that if you’re interested in chemistry, chemical engineering is a better degree with more job opportunities and higher pay… I sort of wouldn’t mind teaching high school chemistry though… So would I be able to teach high school chemistry with a major in chemical engineering and minor in education?

Sure you can. You don’t even need to major in something chemistry related - you just need to get credentialed in the subject area you want to teach (I’m not too sure on the details but I believe the worst you have to do is pass a test or two - plus it might depend on where you want to teach). There were teachers at my high school who didn’t major in the subject they were teaching, including chemistry, and even some who didn’t take a single class on the subject they’re teaching.

My D had an AP chem teacher last year who worked as a Chemical engineer for many years before entering the teaching profession. He is beloved by the students even though his class is challenging. His real world experience, expertise, and enthusiasm for his subject put him in a unique position as a role model. I know many of his students have gone on to great success in the sciences.

I think your plan is very sound. Whether you work in the field, or teach , or do both, you’ll have plenty of options and opportunities to make the world a better place. Good luck.

OP:

You seem to have multiple threads going that ask the same questions. Please integrate into one thread – I have given you advice as well, and none of these posters may have seen it. Nor was I able to see their sound advice and experience.
