I am still a sophomore in high school aspiring to major in technical theater or stage management, but I know nothing about enrolling into either major. I understand I’m still young and have more time to think about it, but I’m the type of person that wants to plan things ahead of time or at least know what I should be doing. So, I was wondering what kind of things does USC require or prefer/recommend to be accepted to their school.
I am taking a class that works in this field (since freshman year and of course all the way to the end of senior year), and we do have a few “large” shows with full sets, lights, etc. I’m going to be the assistant stage manager for our upcoming concert (one of the large shows), and just a regular deck crew member for the next large show. The jobs for the largest show of the year have not been decided, but I am hoping to get a leadership job. By junior year, I do think I have the possibility of becoming a stage manager for one of the large shows (hopefully for the largest show of the year). My grades are kept within the A range, with AP and honor classes.
Do you think what I am doing is sufficient or is there something else I should do? And do I need to have a portfolio? (This may sound extremely silly but how do I create a portfolio for technical theater/stage managing?)
Also, from what I’ve searched, it doesn’t seem like UCLA provides those majors specifically, so what would be the major to take in UCLA for technical theater or stage management? And, are the answers for the questions above about USC the same for UCLA too?
