Ted O'Neill and his Mastery of Language

As most people who post here are regulars, and therefore well acquainted with the University of Chicago, I certainly do not need to go into detail when I speak about O'Neill's reputation as an amazing orator, especially when it comes to giving convocation addresses. The link below will let you access past speeches he made to entering Chicago classes, and you will see, like I have, that his notoriety is justified.

I've read all of his speeches. They're a pleasure to read on their own. I hope I hear one firsthand next year.

I understand he teaches a course in the Core from time-to-time as well, I believe it may be "Human Being and Citizen." I wonder how many admissions deans actually teach a course to those they admit. It must give him a real sense of the type of student admitted.

very true.... and Im pretty sure it is "Human Being and Citizen," since in every speech he seems to find a way to incorporate a reference to it

I think reading his speeches last year was the final thing that made UChicago my 1st choice. It's all about the attitude and uniqueness.

Yup I read all of those last year before applying EA. It really convinced me too :-)

The delivery of his speeches is wonderful, too - if you are accepted and decide to attend, make sure that you arrive at the opening convocation early enough to be inside Rockfeller Chapel for it. Oh - and make sure your mom has kleenex if she is inclined to get emotional!
