Strange as it may sound, S1 checked to see if the letters he received form colleges were hand-signed. It made a difference to him. Bonus points for personal comments.

Thanks for posting that! I'm a fan.

Interesting note:

Four years ago this fall (was it really that long ago?), I sat next to Ted's wife (purely by accident) in Rockefeller Chapel during the opening ceremony. It was interesting hearing her comments about it all.

Ted is the real thing, it seems to me.

Ted is indeed the real deal, and he cares deeply about the students and the University.

Speaking of Ted's wife...S went for a "safety" interview at Bard College, and was interviewed by Ted's wife (not a regular occurrence; I think she was helping out, and there are many Bard/Chicago connections).

After interviewing him, she told him that he belonged at Chicago, not Bard, which S already knew. S applied EA, was accepted and applied nowhere else, and is now eagerly awaiting the start of his 2nd year in September.

Here's my Ted story:

I was playing center field in the UChicago summer softball league when Ted came up to bat. I laughed out loud at my chance to school him on the finer points of the game when "whack", he slams this line drive right to me. I put my hands up to do my smooth, in-one-motion flyball snag when the friggin' ball zooms past and smacks me full on the face. I hit the grass like a sack of gravel and after rolling around in pain for a while, look up to see Ted's concerned face peering down at me, full of apologetic worry.

The bastard.

^^Great stories.

I can't wait to meet Ted.
