ok...the move in packet make it very confusing.

they say you can have campus service or local service by subscribing to a monthly or yearly subscription. then it says you can get an authorization code for free...

so do we have to pay a monthly fee for campus/local service? or do we just pay per minute or something?

I'm probably the only guy on this forum who can answer this, having actually subscribed to a telephone line because I didn't have a cellphone during freshman year. You can subscribe to a UCLA-provided phone service by making monthly payments that are billed to your URSA account by going to the CTS site (http://www.cts.ucla.edu/RTS/index.htm) and applying online. There's an activation fee (I don't remember any free activation in my packet, though) and your calls are also billed per minute depending on the call distance. The front desk of your dorm will supply the phone itself for free, but you can also use your own.

The monthly fee is $17.25, so if you made one call in the past month for 2 cents, they still bill your URSA for $17.27. Having stood on both sides of the phone issue, I now prefer a pre-paid cellphone plan because it's actually cheaper than having a UCLA landline subscription (I don't chat very often, so $25.00 worth of cellphone minutes usually lasts me the entire school year).

yeesh, even my regular home landline doesnt cost than much, and it includes unlimited local calling!

i have a cell phone, but my all in one printer has fax, so i thought i might be able to hook it up (though i dont forsee the need to use a fax). oh well guess not then. i'm not paying $17.25 to hook up a fax i wont use. :p
