Tell me about UVA:

There's a specific section for students, but it's huge, at least for the football games. There's the hill and there are stand seats, they're the first ones you come up on on the left. And at Basketball games, there are student sections too. I haven't been, but that's what my friends have said. The football games are awesome :) I love singing the Good Ole Song after each touchdown and at the end of the game. It's a really nice sight.

So for fb, you can choose either the hill or the stadium student section?

Are fb/bb tix discounted for student section seating? Any idea on how much they cost?

FYI....my D LOVES old dorms...I think she likes the idea that you more easily get to know the other kids because it is a hall style rather than suite style living...meaning suite style you have to go to a bit more trouble to know others outside your suite. There are greek and non-greek kids and all levels of affluence. For the most part, the kids are actually pretty close and get along fine. D's only problem is her own roomate who unfort. does not tolerate anyone else's schedule other than her own...and you need to be flexible as possible when living with a roomate, esp in hall-style. Just my observation of her situation.

fb and bb home game tickets are free for uva students -- for football games you just bring your id and you swipe it to get into the gate. For basketball games you have to sign up for a ticket online and its kind of like a lottery system -- tickets get assigned based on your prior attendance to games, so you get rewarded with a higher chance of getting tickets if you are loyal to the team and go to the majority of the games.

Just a note about the suite style. It all depends on your preference. But new dorms does not equal suite, they are building new dorms that have the hall style. I really like the suite style. You don't get to know just your suite but the next suite too (if you guys get along like ours did). So instead of knowing a lot of girls kind of, I know about 18 really well. Of course there are exceptions to the harmony, but I definitely prefer suite. Of course, it all depends on what you want: to know a lot of people or to know some really well. It can be a mixed bag, and I definitely think that it could not be fun if you guys didn't get along. It depends on you!

Old Dorms v New Dorms

My S lived in OD just because he had friends who had gone there who said they were better. He had no other reason. I think their location is great, and while they are not fancy, they are clean and perfectly functional.

On the diversity thing, there is no malicious intent on anyone's part. It is just a self perpetuating problem: minorities admits hear that there is more diversity in new dorms, so minorities tend to request new dorms. Then guess what? The new dorms really do have more diversity. You can't then say that people in old dorms chose them because they are racist, or southerners, or anything else. They just like the old dorms.

The University is aware of the gap and wants to do something about it, but also does not want to take away choice from the new students. If you are concerned about diversity, but want the old dorms, I suggest you call housing and talk about it. Perhaps they can hook together groups of minority students who all ask for old dorms. Over time you can change it.

k_jo: so how does the bb thing work for frosh who obviously have no prior home attendance then? Thanks for the info too, you've been great.

mjo: the suite thing sounds good to me. Is it more expensive than old dorms?

hartin: Thanks for the diversity note. I'm not a minority or anything, I just really like diversity. Sounds like ND is a good fit for me anyway. But I'll look into both options just in case.

So how is the weather in VA? Does it snow and rain a lot during the winter?

Learnme, my perception may be skewed because I'm from the northeast, but we've only gotten one snow storm and the snow was gone in two days. We've had flurries a few time, but that one storm was the only real time we has accumulation.

The local schools are often delayed by "re-icing", which is what happens when the melted snow freezes overnight. We get plenty of black ice when that happens.

Less than an hour from here is a snow resort that has been getting snow pretty routinely for the last couple months, so if you're into snow sports, you'll have an opportunity to ski/board.

I've written about weather a big on my blog. Just use the search box at the top to find the posts.

I believe the new and old dorms are priced the same, but it depends on if you get a single, double or triple. There's a price break down on the housing website I believe.
Perk about old dorms: you're close to grounds so you don't have to wake up too early for classes and you don't have a long walk. They are the typical college dorm scenario. I hear its a good atmosphere too.
Perk about new dorms: the walk isn't that much longer (if you do the short cuts), close to Ohill, not far from the football stadium, suite style (mostly) and the hall style dorms are air conditioned. Diverse.
Just as a note, Old and New dorms are only a few years apart.

learnmestuff: from what i understand, Shots Points (Basketball Loyalty Points) don't carry over from year to year. And sometimes you can luck out and get tickets to good games even if you don't have many shots points. Its all sort of a mystery to me, but nearly everyone who wants to go ends up being able to get a ticket. You just have to request them in advance and print them early instead of just showing up at the arena and swiping to get in.

The problems obtaining tickets occur when we are having a good season (not this year...) and we have extra playoff (or whatever they are) games. Those are the ones people really want to see and are the hardest to get tickets for unless you've been going all season.

If you want to check out weather, just go to the webcams regularly...

U.Va. Webcam: Rotunda

You can see how sunny it is by the shadows, whether it is raining or snowing, and the temps by the clothing.

What percentage of the student body is middle-class or poor?

Where do the smart intellectual types live/study/hang out?

If you're Black and you choose the Old Dorms, will you be snickered at or politely avoided by people, and forced to find Black friends because your closed-minded White neighbors won't talk to you?

If you're a Black man and you're dating a White woman, will people look at you with scorn and disapproval on campus / in CVL?

Can any poor people, non-frat intellectual people, and non-White people comment on how life's been at UVa?

I'm non white, and to respond to your questions in a broad way, you're worrying too much. UVA is an open minded, accepting place -- or at least I've found it to be so. No one cares who you date or the color of your skin, the only person would probably only be you. =)

vicente: as a white person, I promise not to judge you by your skin color...a bit of a cliche term, I suppose, but seriously I wouldn't have any trouble with that.

As for the intellectual thing....with me??? haha, jk ;)

Question: My grandparents live in Keswick (idk 5-10 minutes from c-ville). If I attend UVa (crosses fingers), what advantages, if any, does this provide for me?

you get good food whenever you want it?

I was thinking along the lines of driving a car (parking at their house kinda thing idk?)

How would you get to your car if you parked at Keswick? Lol. Regardless, you won't need a car your first year, if ever.

Keswick is not 5-10 minutes away from Grounds. It's about 20 minutes using the highway and about 30 if you go through town and up Pantops Mountain.

The area is full of horse farms, has a few developments, and is home to a great hotel and country club. I don't know of any public transportation to get you there.

I am having dinner with my D this Friday night in the main dining room at the hotel in Keswick. Although I think Dean J is on the money with her time estimates, if you like, I can provide a precise time and distance report for travel by car from from Old Dorms to Keswick Hall.
