My kid passed her grad school qualifying exam (one of two she has to pass) on the first try this week! She studied hard over winter break, but didn’t really expect to make it through; she just finished her first semester of grad school and gets 3 tries. But she squeaked through and is so excited.
H is building a “Little Free Library “ for our backyard ( we back up to a path where a lot of people walk/run/bike etc). I have sent for registration and gathering books. Cant wait to open it!
I ordered personal checks with a photo of the view from our cabin’s front porch (Flagstaff Lake in Maine with Mt. Bigelow behind it). I will smile every time I write a check.
I got a phone call this morning from a gentleman I met yesterday. He seemed distressed and I asked if I could help. He said he left his phone at a restaurant earlier. I loaned him my phone so he could try calling his phone. No answer.
He was calling to let me know the restaurant held and returned his phone to him when he went back today (he couldn’t remember the name of the place yesterday). It was nice to hear how happy he was and that he got his phone back.
Im SO, SO happy and relieved! I’ve been concerned for some time about my aging healthcare team. This was heightened when one of my favorite docs retired due to a cancer recurrence and another indicated he’s semi-retiring.
My internist is 68, as is H’s. My internist says his wife can’t find an internist! I finally thought to ask my new lung doctor, whom I like and respect a lot. He referred me to HIS internist whom I just met yesterday. We got along very well and they are ages 50 and 45 respectively—they have experience but hopefully will keep practicing for some time longer.
I just wrote a thank you note to my long time internist whom I’ve been seeing for decades, telling him I’m transferring so my two docs can work together in my care and share records, since they’re in the same medical system. It’s a little bittersweet but I’m very relieved to have a younger team who will work well together.
I really wanted to find a new MD now, before I’m on Medicare as there are a lot of MDs who do not accept new Medicare patients. The new doctor even gave me her cell #, as my lung doctor did!
Very relieved–just booked hotel for a conference I’m attending in May. Originally I booked it at one hotel that none of the other folks I know will be staying. I just switched to the hotel that several folks I know will be staying at–as a special bonus the rate is reasonable, there is a free airport shuttle AND a free shuttle to the nearby attractions, plus its one of the conference hotels so there will be a conference shuttle getting folks between the hotel and the conference center! Best of all, I was able to get the federal government rate for our rooms which is nearly $50 less than the convention rate!
H just realized yesterday that he has outlived the age that both of his parents and his older sister lived to and is still in very good health, as is his brother. He also has an aunt that is 93 and an aunt who died at 103, so I’m hoping we will have more decades of pretty good health and fun times.
I just posted this is the “Say It Here” thread, but I’ll post it here too:
I can’t tell anyone yet, but I can tell you all: My younger son is going to propose to his loooooooooong-term (7+ years) GF tonight, when he gets back from a business trip. He told DH and me on a phone call, and then called her parents to “ask permission.” They said yes.
I’m so happy and excited!! We absolutely adore her!!!
We were chatting with s friend who is worried about her D who has been clinically depressed over bad breakup with a long term BF. We talked about some of the various online dating sites and that many young people have met nice guys online, including two of my new nephew in laws.
She talked to her D about that and the D has met someone online and they’ve been on 3 dates and the D is also going back to her therapist and generally more engaged. Yay!
It’s a boy!
Due July 24th!
Can’t wait!
^It’s a boy! also. Sept. 16th.
Today was a great day for spring country skiing in the Cascades — tried a new place only an hour from home that was excellent. And headed out on Tuesday for a few days with both kids in DC.
We saw DS in the hospital on Friday and he looks wonderful! I’m sure it’s the low-stress environment that has helped. Hoping he’ll be discharged this week (he’s been there for 22 days now).
Our new Cavalier King Charles puppy is almost ready to come home!
Ods and wife bought a house!!! They are so excited!
I was overcharged at Total Wine. When I returned the next day, the 2 managers tried to convince me I was wrong. I left, but came right back. I told them I was no math genius, but they should run it thru on their calculators. Their machines were wrong. The head man got ornery, and I told him I was getting annoyed. I said that I watched him adding the figures 3x, and the calculator was correct, not the store machine. Since this was an advertised special, the machines had not been properly adjusted. He gave me back my money, only $10.50, but still.
Today is DS1’s 21st Birthday. He just told us that the Ballroom Dancing Teams in RI will be part of the Disney live action film Anastacia. They film in Newport this week. Each dancer receives $500 for their club. The club really needs the money and they will be extras in a cool movie.
I heard about a Girl Scout troop that is based in a women and children’s shelter in downtown Seattle. They were selling Girl Scout cookies for a trip to an amusement center as well as donating a portion of the sales to the shelter. The troop was less than half way to their goal when a story about them was aired on radio. They reached their goal in 2 hours.

Tonight my son returned from his second deployment in Afghanistan. So incredibly relieved, happy, and grateful to have him back in the US safe and sound.
@GRITS80 - Sometimes the ‘something good’ brings tears to my eyes. Thank you to your dear son and your entire family for your service!
The staff at my mom’s assisted living home is so kind. Their love and care for her is such a blessing.
