Tell me somethin' good . . .

Enjoying our relaxing Bermuda vacation. Not much hope for Oracle team USA in the America’s Cup, but we will be rooting them on later today!

I was home taking care of my 94yo dad this past week and my son, his fiancee, and my sister came for dinner. (and they aren’t really close distance-wise–it takes some effort!). Had a great time!
I messaged my son beforehand that his granddad REALLY wanted to just talk to HIM (my dad didn’t get to see my son a lot when he was growing up and felt he missed that relationship with his grandkids) and try his best to accommodate that wish–and my loving son (and his fiancee–gotta love her and I do!) did just that.

And then when I got home after almost a week and my husband had cleaned all the wood floors and resealed countertops and cleaned the bathrooms? Wow. Paradise for sure… I need to step up my game…

We went to talk with the CPA who does our taxes about whether there’s anything we could or should be doing differently. He cheerfully said we seem to be doing fine and that we DO seem to have a financial plan (even if it isn’t formalized or committed to writing) that is working just fine for us so no need to stress or worry about it. It was a very nice and cheery meeting.

For some reason, this story popped into my head. I thought it might give you guys a smile.

When we were first married, we had an apartment in a 2 family house directly across the street from a gorgeous catering hall. I used to sit in the window on a summer afternoon and watch the brides and grooms arrive in their limos, and wonder what the hall looked like inside. My husband and I decided that one of these days, we would crash a cocktail hour for 15 minutes-- not eat or drink anything, but just wander around and see whether the inside was as gorgeous as the outside. But alas! We were never dressed well enough to pull it off.

One Saturday afternoon, we were returning from an event at one of our schools and saw our chance. I was wearing a cocktail dress, my husband was in a suit as we saw the limo coming down our block. We decided that this would be the day. We walked down the block, up to the catering hall, then turned and crossed the street into our apartment.

We would have been the only non-African Americans at the wedding!! Not exactly the right crowd for me to be inconspicuous, with my blonde hair and blue eyes!!!

We never did see the inside of that hall!

We finally got to take the cone off our 13-month-old puppy. Her real name is Molly but I call her Little Missy Bad Girl. She chose to run into a car going 30 miles per hour and severely injured a ligament in her paw and had a wound on the other paw that went down to the bone.

Now that the cone is off, our three dogs can use the doggie door again, Little Missy Bad Girl doesn’t need to be on a leash when we go out, and everyone is happy again.

I made a perfectly cooked hard boiled egg in my pressure cooker (the one I got after seeing a thread about pressure cookers on CC). Not much else is going well right now, but I’m going to have an awesome egg salad sandwich for lunch tomorrow! Sometimes you gotta appreciate the little things …

My S is at a summer music festival that is hosted at this place that in winter is a ski resort. Besides him seeming to actually enjoy it and getting some acknowledgement that hopefully will bolster his ego a little, the amazing thing is the guy who owns the place. He built the place back in the early 60’s, and is now in his 80’s, and he is truly someone who I think has and continues to get the most out of life. He insists at meals on serving everyone (being French, you better get there when they ring the bell…and the food of course is first rate), he still is the head of the ski school and teaches there and absolutely loves being around the young musicians in the program and the guests who come through. He must be a great guy to work for, apparently the staff at the resort have been working there for like 30 years or more…it is really neat to see someone who loves what he is doing and seems to still have zest for life.

I got back from out of town and my adopted-us cat still loves me, as much as my sweet self centered ball of fur can. This made me happy.

That’s nice TQ–my kitty was pretty irritated with me for leaving on vacation but fortunately got over it…

I am the proud sole owner of my apartment now.

I’m I brought 7 bowls of fruit to a dinner tonight. One was my first home grown pineapple of the season. People just raved. I like growing fruit.

H made a lovely dinner of a marinated halibut. I SO did not want fish but this turned out
to be delicious.

A few weeks ago D called in tears that she didn’t have a summer internship and all her friends did. Then a week later suddenly she got offers for 3! All unpaid, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Oh, for the foodies out there I cooked a batch of Momofuku Milk Bar corn cookies last week. Turned out ridiculously fabulous and W and I have been devouring them non-stop.

DW and I just volunteered to be bumped from an overbooked flight. We’ll arrive to our destination 3 hours later and $854 richer.

I’m getting to meet with a friend I only see once a year in a few weeks! She’s a sweetheart, and I can’t wait to see her! Also, I was just accepted into the highly competitive (at least in my school) yearbook committee!

I met seven high school friends for dinner and drinks. It’s amazing that after all these years we still have so much in common and such a great time together.

My in-laws celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They are still healthy enough to live alone, travel the world and walk around a lake every day.

^Likely they are healthy enough to live alone and travel the world because they walk around the lake every day! (And good for them!)

My sourdough starter works!

“Sin In A Tin” dessert from the local grocery freezer was totally delicious for our company tonight.
And I only bought it because I thought it was cute :x.
