Tell me somethin' good . . .

Today while we were eating breakfast at a restaurant we like, the next table had a woman with three young ladies. The woman mentioned that the ladies were college students who just arrived for 3 week exchange from Japan with a local U and she was helping them learn to order in a restaurant (they all ordered waffles, a drink and some ordered bacon and eggs). She also ordered a cup of coffee so they could try it.

I whispered to H and we quietly agreed and asked the waitress if we could have and pay their check as well as ours. The waitress smiled and gave us a check with all charges for all 6 people on it and subtracted H’s senior discount from the entire bill.

We left well before they were done and learned that their bill was paid. It made us very happy to think how happily surprised they would be.

My not-usually-very-friendly cat is asleep on my lap. (Yes, I realize he’s just using me for my body heat, and unfortunately, I have to get up now, but still, it makes me happy  )

I get to spend the entire day with my grandson. He is delightful! Right now he’s standing at the ottoman playing with the colored rings from the Fisher Price Rock-A-Stack. I remember D and S doing the same when they were his age. Each time I talk to him, our eyes meet he gives me a huge smile. I am blessed.

The letters to the editor/editorials I wrote and sent this weekend will be published soon–just got a call from the newspaper asking if they were really sent from me and if they had my permission to publish. YIPPEE! Hopefully one or both will be published in time for World COPD Day on Wednesday 11/15/2017 or at least for COPD Month, which is all of November.

D’s BFF from HS and her wonderful partner came to dinner as I am alone for 17 days while
H travels. So much fun. AND she changed the hall lightbulb that I could not reach.
D lives a coast away. Her friends think of our home/me as theirs. And I feel so loved.

My frozen shoulder is finally healed enough to go back to water exercise tonight for the first time in 10 months. Saw my swimming friends tonight and feel completely relaxed now that I am home.

I’m hoping after the service department checks out my van today, I’ll be able to come back here and post some happy news. [-O<

This summer the Alaska SeaLife Center rehabilitated an abandoned baby walrus that some gold miners found. He was skin and bones. He needed around the clock babysitters because walruses are social animals and very tactile. https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/wildlife/2017/07/05/with-round-the-clock-care-and-lots-of-cuddles-an-orphaned-walrus-starts-to-rebound/

Against all odds he survived and is now fat and sassy. He has moved to SeaWorld Orlando where there is another baby walrus his age for him to grow up with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmy2EFsiczM I love a happy ending!

Currently the ASL is caring for a stranded baby beluga whale. It too requires 24 hour care. Experts have flown in from all over the US and Canada to help out. https://www.adn.com/features/alaska-news/wildlife/2017/11/04/the-tale-of-a-rescued-cook-inlet-beluga-whale/

Just spoke to my friend who is an inventor and ordered over a dozen prototypes of his invention—a mosquito repellant bracelet that keeps all chemicals off your body. I’m goonf to give it as Christmas gifts to some loved ones.

I got one last summer as a favor when I attended his D’s wedding. The past few nights, we put it on our wed between our heads so the mosquitoes who had found their way into our bedroom don’t buzz around our heads and disturb our sleep. It works PERFECTLY. I have never gotten a bite when wearing the bracelet!

Since he can’t sell them, he’s gifting them as samples and I’m gifting him a donation for R&D. I’m thrilled at all he and his lab does and can’t wait for them to get FDA approval!

So pleased with Columbia Sportwear! They really stand behind their products! I noticed that my jacket was leaking more and more and I finally called them and asked how to make it more waterproof it at least water resistant. They told me to mail it back and they’d have their warranty department take a look at it. I did mail it in about a week ago and they just emailed me full credit, indicating it cannot be repaired and I can use the credit to purchase what I want at their brick & mortar store or online. Yippee! I will continue to buy lots of gear from this great company, who stands behind its products.

D is applying to MBA programs. Today she heard from one of her 4 schools and she got in… Not only that but they are offering her a full ride (tuition). This is a school she really likes, in a city she really likes. She still needs to wait another few weeks to see what her options are, but she knows she has a really good one already

My good news.

  1. This past year, I’ve increased my GPA by over 1.0 in the past year.
  2. This week, I’ve started a consistent exercise and strength training regiment.
  3. Next week, I’m surprising my family for Thanksgiving  I haven’t been home for Thanksgiving in 3 years!

@CaliCash That is awesome. How time flies. I remember your journey to college. Your parents will be so happy to see you. Happy Thanksgiving.

Today S called and sent us info — he’s joining us for Thanksgiving this year! He arrives on Monday for a week! He’s rarely joined us for Thanksgiving, so of course we are THRILLED!

My kitty returned home yesterday morning after a 10-day walkabout, I had all but written him off. I had packed up all the cat toys, food, and litter box and put it in my trunk to donate to the local animal rescue league just the day before. I also deep cleaned the house to rid it of all cat hair. Should have known he would return after that lol.

S17 has been approved to be a marrow donor. We are getting all of the details shortly but the procedure will take place during his winter break. He is nervous but excited and the rest of us are all so proud of him for choosing to do this.

Although we can’t do Thanksgiving as a family this year, we will all be together the day before AND we are going out to eat at one of my favorite (and least expensive) restaurants. All 5 kids will be there, including oldest son and his gf, who are arriving home from their Hawaiian vacation that day and only D and her bf, with whom she recently entered into a domestic partnership, and her bf’s brother, whom my other kids have never meant, will be there. Plus, the two middle boys have agreed to drive D, her bf and his bro back to Brooklyn afterwards. I am so happy (and relieved) that as my children get older, they are developing into a more cohesive unit. I honestly thought, for instance, that the two youngest boys wouldn’t let the door hit each other in the back when they grew up, but they are now friends. This is one of the best and most unexpected developments in the past couple of years in our family.

@techmom99, congratulations to your son for becoming a bone marrow donor. I am eager to hear about his experience once it’s behind him.

And I love love love it when our formerly rivalrous children become buddies. It warms the cockles of my heart!!

My two college kids got home safely (2hr/8r drives) last night. So nice to see them and hear their news/ happy chatter in the house with 5 of our 7 kids now home.
S got stopped for speeding at one of those places where the speed limit goes down quickly as you enter a town. But he was let go with a warning. (He was lucky…his older brother was ticketed a couple years ago/same drive/similar spot).

S1 is at a conference in the city my sister and BIL live in. He’s been staying with them. My sister says he’s “wonderful!” Well, I already knew that, but it’s nice to have confirmation.

I think this video is good. The way a couple of these boys got so emotional over doing a good deed was really touching.
