I've heard a lot of stories about Cal students regretting their decision to attend Berkeley.

So please, current students, tell me a pro and a con about UC Berkeley! Thanks!

Love: Beautiful campus, absolutely incredibly professors.
Hate: As you go across campus from south to north, the amount of good looking girls decrease exponentially. XD

Love: Quality of academics, Friendliness of the majority of classmates, Number of research/internship/job opportunities available.

Hate: Some ethnicities seem to communicate with their own, Opportunities are abound but you have to go find them (no mommy/handholding).

Coming from a 4th year MCB, who is heading off to grad school in August.

Love: Academics
Hate: Hobos

Love: campus… food around the campus… from greek to japanese to italian to american to indian = YUMMY
Hate: sometimes it gets really hot…

bump, can anyone else provide their opinions?

Pros: beautiful campus and architectural design, incredibly talented teachers/researchers, great places for cheap meals (but also great places for $20+ meals when mom and dad are around), easy transportation for flights home to LA

Cons: housing (overpriced, overly competitive for apartments), hobos who populate downtown, overenrollment which leads to being put on waiting lists, lack of diversity

When you talk about “quality of academics”, what do you mean? Do you really learn a lot from classes, or are they just hard and intellectually sapping?

Personally, I don’t see how anything “hard” can be intellectually sapping. Maybe it’s just me. I would say that classes are hard, maybe even harder than at many other schools, but not repressively so. The demanding classes require that you put more effort into the material; you will learn/remember more because of it (also helpful for mcats in my case). I came to Berkeley to learn and get the best education available to me. If you don’t want to work hard then I would find it really hard to recommend Berkeley for you.

On the other hand, there is always free time and time to do socially engaging things. Don’t let anyone tell you that they are in a constant state of studying with no time for fun; if they do, then you have a liar or a person with severely impaired studying habits.

If what you truly seek is balance between hard work and relaxing play, then I think you’ll fit in. I would do it all over again.

I’m not sure if I would agree with this one. Some of the best looking, very attractive, hot girls with the right mix of intelligence can be found at Berkeley. My wife is a Cal alumna. As you go around the campus, you’d be shocked there are so many hot girls around. It’s like it’s a center of a humongous modeling agency! At least, that was my observation.

What I like about Berkeley is its academic strength and contribution to society. Much of the convenience we experience now are products of Berkeley’s relentless efforts to improve the lives of the human race. It’s a famous school with a solid reputation across the universe.

What I don’t like about Berkeley is the dominance of Asian students (it’s like 50% Asians) plus the fact that it is overcrowded (more than 23k undergrad students). I’d like the Asian student population trimmed down to 30%, and the whole undergrad population be decreased to 15 thousand. Berkeley is a tough school–not for the weak and faint hearted… Therefore, it’s just right that only the creme of the crop, the best and the brightest, the chosen few…get admitted.

Nicely done, where will you be going?

love food, area, weather other than winter weather
Hate winter weather, smart people

RML, lots of Asians? Why…are you racist or something? (Joking!)

I see. I’m pretty concerned about Berkeley because I’m considering business, and Haas has only a 50% admit rate. I think it’d be pretty useless to go to Berkeley, get rejected by Haas, then be at a loss for what to pursue.

^ My wife is the most beautiful woman on the face of the earth! My wife is 100% Asian. :)

Most if not all Asian women at Berkeley are very smart, sociable, attractive and empowered.

Having said that, I still don’t want them to dominate Berkeley’s atmosphere. Let’s share those smart, attractive Asians to other schools. They need them more than Berkeley does :D

I’ve also heard Berkeley is very liberal. I’m more of a conservative - truthfully, I barely care about politics. I’d probably be eaten alive up there.

^My friend goes to Berkeley and he said there’s a big conservative population.

wolftron…you won’t. lol
