Tell me your real first year experience

exactly what the title says!

I sorta want to hear more experiences from people who've been there already. I've seen some videos provided by CalSO on youtube and I've also heard 3 at CalSO. The more the merrier, right?

Overall, I enjoyed my first year at Berkeley (I am now a junior), but there were many things that didn’t go liek I accepted them to be.

Berkeley is MUCH harder academically than I ever would have expected. Especially the lower division science classes, it gives new definition to what it means to earn an A. You will be challenged harder than you ever have before. If you don’t like to work hard, your not going to be very happy here overall.

The people in your classes aren’t as outgoing as they might seem, at least that’s true for me being an MCB major. I have made most of my friends if not all through my floor in the dorm I lived in. Science majors at cal are very hard core and aren’t the most receptive people. This bothered me at first because my perception of college was that everyone wants to have fun when there not doing school work and hang out with their friends. Not entirely true here. I really recommend joining a club when you get on campus, I think it will help you find a group of friends and people you enjoy. I didn’t really get involved in a club my first semester, and I regret that.
