Telluride Assocation Summer Program (TASP) 2014

@suyeonan2, haha hey! join the club :slight_smile: and your question is answered on their faq page: [Telluride Association: Our Programs: For High School Students: Summer Program for Juniors (TASP): FAQ](http://www.tellurideassociation.org/programs/high_school_students/tasp/tasp_faq.html#recent)

yeah, i did them separately to increase my post count…

Hey guys, for your critical analysis essays, did y’all do a relatively in-depth summary of whatever text you chose as like a separate paragraph from the analysis part, or did y’all integrate the context of the book in the analysis?

@unlikely do they inform you whether you get in the program, or do they only inform accepted students? Because a definitive answer would be nice, and it would be easier to just move on and apply to other programs?

@nervousfreshie, ummm i heard that they do inform the rejected students of their status, but they do that after they inform the accepted students. and yeah, i was gonna do that too.

@vivalamelanie, i think both are fine as long as you make the essay flow well.

Hey guys,
I recommend going over previous TASP threads as well if you have any questions.

Just wondering, in my essay about discussing a topic, how would it look if I discussed my past involvement in extra curricular work and how it is important to why I care about the topic I am writing about. I just feel that in my essays I devote a large chunk of words to explaining results I have gotten from extra curricular work (it seems more like talking about what I do then discussing a topic)? Anybody have any advice?

Ok I have a (probably stupid) question to ask. For the critical analysis essay, it asks you to write a critical analysis of a text you have read outside of school. What exactly does out of school mean? Does it mean any text that you haven’t used for a school assignment? What if it’s a text you read outside of school for an assignment but you didn’t discuss the text at all in school? I’m asking because for my English class last year, we had to read a book and review/analysis it ourselves and I really liked the book I did. I would have to change my essay quite a bit to fit the TASP question. Anyway, I understand the question will probably fit the stricter interpretation, but I just want to make sure. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone! In regards to the ‘five school and community activities’ section of the application, it asks for how many hours a week and how many weeks in a year I’ve been doing these activities.

I am currently doing an internship that I started in the summer. During the summer I went in for around seven hours almost every day. But once school started, I’ve only been able to go in once a week for three and a half hours. How would I write this on the application?

Thanks!

It should be fine if it’s well-written and isn’t too dry. It’s good to show you actually did something. Most of my essays weren’t simple descriptions of what I did, though – they were anecdotal, aside from the critical analysis essay (which was not personal at all for me, but for some other TASPers it was, so it’s whatevs). Show, not tell. It’s different for everyone, however. Just do what you feel is truly representative of your line of thinking/values/way of writing.

@pmmywest;
You can do any text. You can do a novel, a short story, a poem, even a film. TASP is not going to check if your book was a school reading or not. They say that because usually for school-assigned readings, critical analyses are too common (for example, Lord of the Rings has been analyzed the heck out of by basically everyone; it’s hard to come up with an original analysis). However, if you have a very unique position/analysis on a book that you liked, then feel free to use it.

@autumnisque;
Take the average – add up all the hours you’ve done so far and then divide that by how many weeks you’ve been working. If there’s a space for notes (can’t remember), you can mention it. Shouldn’t be too big of a deal, though.

@vivalamelanie;
I’d be careful spending too much time on a summary. For my essay, I gave a very brief summary as the introduction. To each his own, though. These TASP essays can be very long, so just worry about its length relative to your analysis.

I’m worried about my future plans essay, I have a clear vision of what I want to do but I can’t make the essay seem too cut and dry. Sigh.

How detailed should the work/volunteer experience be? I currently have a paid job, but it’s a complicated situation. Also, I have a pretty extensive list of past volunteer experiences. Should I just list them or provide explanations?

Another question: Should the critical analysis be formal or should we relate the discussion to ourselves by making the essay more personal?

i know it’s kinda late, but happy new year guys! we’re all pretty busy with TASP stuff, but, y’know c:

@ssdss, for my work/volunteer stuff, i just basically said what i did and when, like “volunteered at autism fundraiser, October 2012.” didn’t really go into details. as for the crit analysis, i didn’t make it personal, but i dunno. let’s see what other people say.

My work/volunteer experience has no personality or voice whatsoever… it’s just plain and briefly covers what I did. The only “explanations” I put was when I felt that they weren’t really self-explanatory, but I did write in a paragraph - should it be a list with dates & specific amount of hours instead?

There isn’t enough space to write it all out like I want to. I’ll probably do it like this:

Work experience: blah blah blah
Volunteer experience: blah blah blah

“blah blah blah” being, of course, in list form

What do you guys think?

I think that’s efficient :slight_smile:
I might change mine to be more like a resume.

Whatever floats your boat with 462 characters

462 characters for the work/volunteer experience box? Is it not normal that mine is letting me put almost 1200 so far?

itl let you continue entering info until you press the next page button, during which it will tell you you have too many characters
