Forizzlejdl: :D
Platinumnerd: Ignore the acceptance rate. Just go for it! Thinking about acceptance rates is...blah. Don't. Just apply and see. :)
Lookbeyond: Yes, total homos! :D Haha, you can definitely do your essay on that. It a) is a very valid conflict, b) sounds like you could make it quirky and fun. In any case, why do you think it makes you look spazzy? Explain. As far as the critical analysis goes, do whatever your heart desires. Showcase your analyzing talent. ^^

ay i heard taps gets u into good colleges. how many ppl from it go to hyps? is their a lot of work or can u relax?

hahaha lanky :)

Yeah, and for good reason :)

Hey well it's winter break now and I finally decided to work on my essays. I've been reading some of the posts and I have some questions about the essay topics.

1) What is it asking you to write about? I just find very open ended and I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas about what to say.

2) Is it ok if you offer ideas to fix the problem or is it just how the problem affects you and your thoughts about it?

I hope you guys are doing better than I am cause I'm having a really hard time formulating what to say.

I'm sure that anything you write, as long as it demonstrates that you can actively participate in higher-level thinking (this means making connections, analogies, raising and answering critical questions, being able to connect this to a broader context... etc) and express your ideas coherently and engagingly.... will be fine.

For example (for the first essay), you can write about your favorite book, what stands out to you, how it connects to your life, how it connects to society, how it relates to another book you've also read, whatever. (this is just an example. I'm analyzing something else... random though. it's not anything that the TASP prompt suggested)

I'm honestly not sure about the second essay.

Do any past TASPers want to comment on what I wrote / correct me if I am mistaken? thank you.

I'm in band and we go to a lot of competitions and win awards and such. Is it okay to put that down under the 'Awards and Honors' section? I'm pretty big on band and I'm really proud of those awards. (Not a lot of teams/clubs/anyone from my school win awards so it's definitely something to be proud of.) But they weren't awarded to ME specifically. (It was awarded to the band as a whole, but I'm part of the band...) Should I not put it down? I already have quite a few things but I wanted to put it down because it's special and I feel that it's worth mention.

honestly, it doesn't really matter. last year people were concerned about "parental community activities." it doesn't matter. if you have awards, you can list them. if you already have quite a few things like you said, you probably don't need to put anything else unless you really feel like it's important.

rainmaker, they're open-ended on purpose so you can write about whatever that interests you. you don't need to make extensive analogies/connections to your life/metaphors/references to all the great classics unless you want to. as long as you convey your ideas and thoughts, you should be fine.

to whoever PM'ed me, my inbox was full because i never clean it. you can either try again or email bones.floating@gmail.com and i'll try to answer your question.

I'm working on my essays right now, cause I guess they're all that matter about your application... As for the critical literary analysis, there is a very specific way to write a standard crit-lit, but (correct me if I'm wrong) it doesn't really matter how you do it as far as TASP is concerned.

are we supposed to refer to classics?
until i read this thread, i wasn't even thinking about that...

no, i was trying to say that you don't have to. don't stress out about what you think you are "supposed" to do. i hope everyone is enjoying their break (college apps crunch time for the seniors, ack)!

lanky: I almost died a little inside, but then I realized it was you. :P

Foreverfree: As for the critical analysis: It's not so much that there's a specific WAY of writing it as there's a specific thing goal you try to achieve with a critical analysis (which is obviously to pick apart and analyze a piece critically, hehe). They want to see your analytical skills, basically, and see how you think, how you read things. Stuff llike that. :) This is generally the most structured and formal of the essays (in my experience).

Shuffle: Go ahead and mention! :)

Hamsi2004: You don't HAVE to do anything like that, seriously, trust me. Don't let mention of classics get your tailfeathers ruffled. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and Telluride knows this. They want inquisitive people with alert minds, not people who can JUST quote Dickens, Hemingway, Shakespeare, and other big names (though if you CAN quote them, mad props ^^).

Good luck on college apps to the '07 TASPers. If you need any help, be sure to email me/Facebook me/etc. :) ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT BROWN BECAUSE OMGSZ I WANNA HELP YOU GET IN.

Hi guys,

I'm applying to TASP this year and I had a quick question RE: the booklist. There's one book in particular that I've read that's stood out to me above all the other books I've read in the past year and I was wondering if it would be prudent to highlight that to the point of excluding the others? I'm thinking something along the lines of "Book xyz was the only book I read this year; everything else I just skimmed." Would it be more prudent to include the other books anyways?

Thanks guys! And good luck to everyone

I just got my letter today. I've never heard of this before. Did I get it because of my PSAT? I know that teachers can nominate students, but I don't think mine did :) lol.

No kidding, but I'm kinda overwhelmed by the amount of application stuff (not to mention the competitiveness (is that a word?) of the program). My parents are real sticklers on test scores (like my 232 wasn't good enough for them), and not really into summer programs, so I kinda sorta wanna apply, but I'm not sure. any suggestions?

Hello, so I've been a CC stalker for the past...well 2 years and finally decided to join after compulsively deciding to give TASP a chance.

And obviously, I had some questions.
First of all, is it BAD if my essays are all about 1 and 1/2 pages?
Also, is it okay if my writing style is very informal? I like to "talk" in my essays and a lot of the time, I have TOO MUCH voice.. haha

thanks, mucho ;D

Yeah kinda like the last post, I was writing about psychology as a field that interested me, then I got going into how I think we're living in the matrix. Exactly how far is too far out there that the reader will lose me?

whoa. I think psychology is the study of nutcases, not being a nutcase. just kidding. lol

If you can connect it w/ your interest, go for it

Haha well if you read what I wrote you'd definitely think I was abnormal... jk
