Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2011

should we title the essays?

No titles are necessary. Its up to you though, i dont ever title my work.

Any kids applying or have done the program from the midwest-specifically chicago?

I am from the Chicago suburbs and I attended this past summer. Feel free to PM, although I don’t think there’s any Chicago specific advice I could give.

About how many books should be on your list? 10ish? or less?

hahahaha
Yeah, i dont read much so i practically listed all the books i have read which was 6 at the time. I have no idea how many my buds listed but they sure love reading.

I have no idea how to approach the literary analysis. Can any TASPers provide examples of what they wrote about so at least I have some sort of idea how to get started?

Just out of curiosity, any idea what PSAT score is necessary to get an application in the mail? (I know you can apply even if you aren’t nominated, I just wondered.)

I still have 28 books, even after serious editing - but my other extracurriculars are pretty pathetic, so…

do most of the students who are accepted have some sort of amazing/life-changing thing that has happened to them? or come from a very different background/family life/childhood?
idk that’s what it almost sounded like from the descriptions. i mean, just out of curiosity, it wouldn’t be like weird or anything haha i just don’t have a very interesting life myself :frowning: lol thanks :)

oh and what usernames did you use? stupid, petty question, i know (and REALLY late haha i just found out about this today ahh! :X) but it says in parenthesis that the admissions people can see your username? so is everyone just using their real names?

I attended last year, and I assure you that my life/background is about as mundane as they come. I had about 20 books and periodicals, but one of them was Teen Vogue… there’s not really a wrong way to do the book list. :)

I’m throwing my hat in the ring on this one, and hoping for the best. If I don’t get it, I don’t get it, and I’m fine with that. If I do, I’m prepared for a life changing experience. <3

A bit of question though- is risky a good thing on the essays? Mine at this point are beautiful, if only to me, but they aren’t exactly approachable in the strictest sense, and my literary analysis was on a bit of a silly subject. I just don’t particularly want to sabotage myself, if you know what I mean.

I can say that the circumstances i find myself in are not normal. Only by luck do i care about going to college.
I can’t remember my username. Probably was the same i use for this site.
I know two people at my school who got the postcard/letter and they had PSAT equal or above 230.

I did my literary analysis on a required summer reading book i read for ninth grade and others wrote about obscure books. Just find something that you enjoy, thats what i did.

For the one about listing books, how many is a good number? And did you guys seriously read 20 books last year… o_O

*Can any TASPers provide examples of how they approached the literary analysis? i.e. did you analyze the characters, themes, etc?

I am currently attending a boarding school, and I’m planning to apply for TASP '11.

But I’ve heard rumors that students attending private schools
are at a disadvantage in the admission process because
TASP is geared towards selecting students from a public school background
who do not have as much of an opportunity to engage in discussions, etc.
at school.

Now is this true? Do I face a higher chance of rejection if I am from
a boarding school?

I wouldn’t be too worried about it. I attended TASP last year and at least one of our TASPers attended a boarding school.

And, even if it does lower your chances, would that stop you from applying? If not then this really doesnt matter at all. The odds are already extremely small, but if you are accepted it is well worth the time spent on the application.

and for those of you following this fzaman was my roomate and that stuff he said about being undeserving is totally untrue. I however have no idea how I got in. haha

Also, if you have any specific questions about anything with TASP freel free to PM me. I don’t get on here often but will answer when I do. I would love to help. :)

Dude! Your username gives your identity away! hahaha
I still havent forgot about the message you sent me months ago, ill write you something soon as i can.

For the book analysis, i just examined the theme and wrote about specific scenes that supported my argument. Basically I was progressing through the book and revealing my meaning. However, i do know some people who got really creative with it, which is why i say to write about something that is fun for you.

Has anyone gotten a postcard from Tasp to apply yet?

Yes, I received mine yesterday, live in DC metro area. Do you, or anyone else, know anything about PSAT cutoffs for receiving TASP invites?
