Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) 2012

@SimpsonLisa

No better way to do it. :smiley: The effects can be dealt with later.

What seminar are you interested in?

is it okay if our critical analysis is on a book we read in school?

elloelise- Seeing as the words “outside of school” are bolded, I’d say no.

@156ela

I should have bought an exercise bike with a laptop holder so I could type and exercise at the same time. ;)

I’d be interested in any of the first three (Cornell I & II and Michigan I) but not Michigan II. Just not my kind of thing. What about you? (:

In my essay about my conflicts, I kind of mention Communism.

You don’t think they would freak out on me, would you?

@AnnieZ

In what way do you mention it? :)

@SimpsonLisa

Ahhhh, so now we’re just going to both need to get accepted because I have a feeling we’d get along perfectly. (:

I agree. I’m in love with Cornell I, but would be happy with Cornell II or Michigan I as well. Michigan II sounded cool in the art aspect, but not so much the theater.

Well, it was the viewpoint my grandmother and I were initially fighting about. But then I learned to be open minded about everyone’s opinions, like communism.

@156ela

Oh god, we’re like long lost twins! I had identical reasoning about Michican II. We both need to get in so it can be like a Parent Trap remake where we meet at camp. :D

@AnnieZ

I think that would be perfectly fine. I would exercise a bit of common sense on whether you’re being too defensive/controversial when the reader is the target and it’s not just a retold story (saying “I believe(d) that
” and not “Communism is good/bad because
”) but I think the kind of people that will be reading the TASP applications will appreciate the arguments both for and against something like this and even when they are very firmly on one side of the fence, they won’t penalise someone for something like that. Besides, it’s not the focus of your essay, the conflict is.

If it was, I might give different advice.

That was a little convoluted, sorry. Hope it made sense!

I’m getting distracted from studying for my AP Euro test and I wanted to weigh in on this conversation!

@AnnieZ

Completely agree with you on being open minded about everyone’s opinions. My AP Euro teacher is very libertarian/capitalist and though I don’t disagree with where he stands on issues, I hate how he shuts down all aspects of communism/socialism as pure “evil” so we always end up debating. I think my classmates think I’m a socialist now, lol.

EDIT: So yes, I think it’s okay to put it in, but that’s my personal opinion.

will they notify us if we DON’T get accepted?

@nowyouexplode

I’d take this from the FAQ to include song lyrics but I’d also be very careful to have a very good argument. :)

I had 8 tests last week and I have another six this week.
I have two more essays to write. Is it worth it?

Oh god I’m so screwed guys
First off, my only ‘finished’ essay is about 650 words
Then I have one on 420 words, another on 350, another on 200 and the last 2 on less than 100

D:

Problem/Topic essay officially finished. Taking a break while I think about what I could possibly write for my Critical Analysis if I choose to rewrite it. I’m completely unimpressed with the one I’m half way through because my argument seems weak. Considering picking a different book entirely or maybe not a book
hmmm. Only one essay left though! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! :slight_smile: :D

@thiscity

Look at it this way
will you regret it if you don’t apply?

@nowyouexplode

Ooooh, my bad! Since it does say a text I’d probably lean towards no too but I may be completely wrong.

Thanks, nowyouexplode. Now, to prepare a strong cup of coffee

and @LesleyCordero, don’t worry about it. The content is the most important part. If your points are argued well in a short amount of space, all the more props to you :)

@lesley mine are pretty short too >.<

Sorry I’m asking so many questions, but I think I screwed up the critical analysis!

I did mine on the short story about the man who died in the arctic, which was supposed to show that nature conquers man. I used that and kind of tied it back to our modern day, but I just realized that that was probably just an extension of the theme instead of an argument.

Did I screw it all up??? Ahhh
I don’t want to rewrite it. :(

@thiscity thanks for the feedback, I hope you’re right
I feel like my essays should be 500+ more words

@silencefell Well at least you know you’re not alone now! :confused:

5 hours and 18 mins.

@LesleyCordero

The length of your essays depends a lot on your writing style. Having essays bordering on the word count limit will not mean you get accepted. It’s the substance of your essays. Three of my essays are between 700-750 words. I’ve found that when you stop thinking about your word count, the words flow better and your essays end up longer than those you were worrying about all the way through. :)
